Brady Singer (3-9, 4.52 ERA) and Gabriel Hughes (0-0, 3.14 ERA) took the ball for a 6:40 PM MT first pitch that carried zero playoff stakes but plenty of individual pressure. Singer's season line is ugly, but he's quietly pitched to a 3.16 ERA over his last 6 starts before this one — the kind of stretch that made this matchup less lopsided than the win-loss record suggested.

The Reds cruised to a 7-2 win, cashing the moneyline as Singer's recent form carried over and Cincinnati's offense did the heavy lifting.

Pregame

We backed the Reds on the moneyline near even money, and it held up even with Singer's road struggles a real concern walking in. His recent form — a 3.16 ERA over his last 6 outings — gave Cincinnati a real path to win outright against a Rockies club that's lost 4 of 5. The price reflected a true coin flip, and Cincinnati's recent lineup pop made that a fair number to take.

The catch for Singer all year has been the road: his ERA away from Great American Ball Park has been a mess, and Coors Field is the last place a pitcher wants to test that trend. On the other side, Hughes came in off a solid 6 innings against the Dodgers, and Colorado still has Hunter Goodman mashing at a franchise-record homer pace, with the bulk of that power showing up away from Coors just as easily as at home.

Both rotations are running thin. The Reds are already without Nick Lodolo and dealing with McLain and Dunn on the shelf, while the Rockies are missing 3 starters — Sugano, Quintana and Dollander — to injury, leaning harder than they'd like on arms like Hughes. Neither bullpen was walking into this one at full strength, which made a late lead anything but safe.

The Reds broke through early with a run in the first, then let it simmer before erupting for 3 in the 6th to blow the game open. They tacked on single runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th to turn a tight game into a laugher, finishing with 11 hits against a Rockies pitching staff that couldn't find another gear. Colorado's only offense came on solo runs in the 5th and 7th, nowhere near enough against a lineup that kept the line moving all night.

This one fits the shape of both teams' seasons. Cincinnati is 43-52 and reeling — an offense in the bottom-10 in OPS paired with a bottom-10 pitching staff — but they've shown flashes of exactly this kind of outburst, having dropped an 11-5 game on the Phillies earlier this stretch. Colorado, at 39-59, has lost 4 of its last 5 and is still searching for length from a rotation stretched by injury, even with Goodman doing his part in the middle of the order.

Neither club is playing for October, but nights like this matter for individual reputations — Singer's trade value if he's dealt this winter, Hughes's grip on a rotation spot, and Goodman's case for a strong second half after already locking up an All-Star nod. The final score won't move a standings page, but it says plenty about which team is still fighting and which one is fading.
