Chase Burns (7-1, 2.05) versus Lucas Giolito (2-1, 4.86) at Petco, first pitch 8:40 PM CT. On paper this is a mismatch — Burns hasn't given up more than 2 earned runs in any start this year and punched out 9 Royals over 6 in his last outing. Pinnacle has Cincinnati at -112, which feels generous if you trust the rookie.

The Reds need this one badly. They've dropped 5 in a row, got swept in St. Louis, and then opened this series with a 6-2 loss in which they botched 3 consecutive bunt attempts in the 7th inning to let San Diego rally. That's the kind of inning that gets replayed in a clubhouse meeting. Terry Francona doesn't need many more of those before something gives.

Giolito, meanwhile, is the soft spot in San Diego's rotation right now. He got chased after 4 innings against the Phillies last time out and the local writers are already floating him as the odd man out once Marquez and Waldron get back. Against a Reds lineup that has scored 3 or fewer in 4 of the last 5, though, soft spot is a relative term.

And the injury column is doing the Reds no favors. Elly De La Cruz is still on the 10-day IL with a hamstring and just had his MRI pushed up to Friday, Hunter Greene remains on the 60-day, and the bullpen is missing Emilio Pagan and Pierce Johnson. San Diego is banged up too — no Cronenworth, no Estrada, Andujar day-to-day — but they've got the homestand and the momentum.

The total sits at 7.5 with the under juiced to -121, which tracks: Burns has been an under machine and Petco still plays like Petco at night. If Cincinnati is going to flip this skid, it almost has to happen tonight, because Wednesday's pitching matchup gets a lot less friendly in a hurry.
