Chase Petty gets the ball for the Reds looking to keep the good times rolling, and he draws a Nationals lineup that's been stuck in neutral. Cade Cavalli, Washington's Opening Day starter and a former first-round pick who needed two full years to come back from Tommy John surgery, takes the mound for the home side trying to snap his own team's funk.

Cincinnati's the live dog here even with the price sitting close to even money, and that undersells a team that just won four straight while Washington lost four of five. The Reds' offense has been carrying a wounded rotation, which is a formula that travels well against a Nationals club missing James Wood. Take the value on the hot hand.

Cincinnati's rotation has taken real hits lately. Hunter Greene's elbow issue has Francona talking about a "slim chance" he pitches again this season, and Nick Lodolo is only now working his way back from the 15-day IL. That's a lot of firepower missing from a staff that's still finding ways to win with the bats picking up slack. Spencer Steer's wrist injury adds to the attrition, but the offense hasn't blinked, scoring in bunches during the sweep of Oakland.

Washington's issues run deeper than one bad week. James Wood is out with an oblique strain, robbing the lineup of one of its best young bats, and prospect arm Connelly Early got scratched with forearm tightness just hours before this series even started. Cavalli has quietly been one of the few bright spots in D.C., and Nationals Park could see a rain delay with thunderstorms in the forecast for this one, but he needs a defense and bullpen behind him that haven't been reliable.

The Reds haven't just been winning, they've been finding ways to do it late, taking one-run decisions against the A's twice in the same series. That kind of resilience matters against a Nationals team that's lost close ones and blowouts alike over the last week, including a shutout loss to Philadelphia in the middle of their skid.

Washington did snap a bit of the bleeding with a 10-4 outburst against the Phillies, proof the lineup can still erupt when it clicks. But that came sandwiched between three straight losses, and the bullpen situation behind Cavalli remains thin with multiple relievers on extended injured-list stints. Cincinnati, meanwhile, gets to lean on a group that's playing with total confidence after four straight wins.

This is a matchup of momentum against desperation. The Reds are rolling with a beat-up rotation but a lineup that keeps bailing them out, while the Nationals need Cavalli to be the ace they've been waiting on since his draft day promise. Whoever adjusts to the thunderstorm-threatened conditions and shaky bullpens better wins a game that could easily turn into a slugfest at Nationals Park.
