Soroka has been one of the more reliable arms in the league since coming back from his glute strain, and Lowder's shoulder issues and shaky command still make him the more beatable arm here. Arizona's price reflects a real gap between these two pitching staffs, not just home-field noise. Cincinnati can hang around on a good Lowder night, but this is Arizona's game to lose.

Reds
  • Lowder's last several starts have trended toward his 2024 form
  • Still mixed up on the fringe of the Wild Card race
  • Just got shut out 9-0 by this same Arizona club
  • Lost 1B Toglia to a dislocated shoulder Friday
  • Ace Hunter Greene done for the rest of 2026 and all of 2027
Diamondbacks
  • Soroka running a sub-3.00 ERA since his return
  • Won two straight, including a blowout of this same team
  • Best hitter Ketel Marte out with knee inflammation
  • Also without OF Lourdes Gurriel Jr.
  • Got outscored 1-11 and 4-9 in two games right before this stretch

Soroka (8-3, 2.93 ERA) takes the ball for Arizona against Lowder (4-8, 5.17 ERA) as these two wrap up their set, first pitch at 5:10 PM MT.

Lowder's season has been a mess since a shoulder scare knocked him out of a start in May, and while his last few turns have reportedly looked closer to the pitcher who broke in as a rookie phenom in 2024, he's walking into a lineup missing another piece. Michael Toglia was pulled from Friday's game against this same Diamondbacks club with a dislocated right shoulder, and he joins Spencer Steer, already out with a wrist issue, on the shelf at first base.

None of that has stopped Arizona from hanging around the fringe of the NL Wild Card picture even without Ketel Marte, who landed on the injured list with left knee inflammation. The Diamondbacks have won two straight, capped by that 9-0 win over Cincinnati, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is out too, so both lineups are shorter than they'd like.

The bigger story for Cincinnati is on the mound long-term. Hunter Greene, the Reds' best arm, underwent a second Tommy John surgery this month and won't pitch again until 2028 at the earliest, a gut punch for a rotation that already lost Brandon Williamson to a long injured-list stint. It's part of why a team sitting under .500 still has flashes of fight left in it, but not much pitching depth to lean on.

Chase Field's roof will be closed with the temperature outside sitting at 114 degrees, so whatever happens here plays out in a controlled building rather than the desert air. That favors whichever pitcher actually commands the strike zone, and right now that's Soroka by a wide margin.
