Andrew Abbott and Kyle Leahy both had reason for confidence walking into first pitch at 1:15 PM CT. Abbott was fresh off 6 shutout innings against Seattle, and Leahy hadn't allowed more than 1 earned run in his last outing either. Neither one figured on the game turning into a slugfest-turned-bullpen-war that stretched into extras.

Missed — the Cardinals lost outright in 10, with the Reds' extra-inning rally overriding the home-field case.

Pregame

The Cardinals were the shorter price here off Leahy's strong season line and the extra home cooking, and on paper that lean made sense against a Reds team still under .500. Cincinnati's lineup had other ideas, riding homers from De La Cruz and Hayes into extras before finishing it with a pinch-hit rally. It's a rough beat for the home side, but the process, backing the better-rested rotation arm at home, was sound even if the result wasn't.

The lineup cards told a story of their own before the first pitch. Spencer Steer would later exit with right wrist pain, but St. Louis was already down Lars Nootbaar, out sick for the series finale. That left the Cardinals leaning harder on their bench in a game that ended up needing every available body.

Elly De La Cruz and Ke'Bryan Hayes both went deep for Cincinnati to answer a Fermín sac fly and a Herrera homer, and the score sat knotted at 2-2 into the ninth. Nobody was pulling away, and both bullpens had already been through the wringer over the first two games of the set.

The 10th inning is where it broke open. Sal Stewart came off the bench and slapped a pinch-hit single to score Tyler Stephenson and put the Reds up 3-2, then Nathaniel Lowe followed with a single that brought in both De La Cruz and Stewart to make it 5-2. Alec Burleson got one back with an RBI single, but St. Louis couldn't find a second. That finishing kick is exactly the kind of late-game execution the Reds have leaned on all week, and it's the difference between a series split and a sweep.

Cincinnati has plenty working against it on paper, a 48-55 record and a rotation gutted by injuries to Nick Lodolo, Brandon Williamson and Graham Ashcraft among others, but this trip was a reminder that the roster still has teeth when the lineup clicks. Winning 3 straight road series for the first time since 2023 isn't nothing for a team that's spent most of the year buried in the standings. For St. Louis, dropping the finale after cruising in game one, 7-0, is the kind of split-personality week that's defined a Cardinals club now at 53-51 and treading water in a crowded middle of the pack.
