The pitching matchup looked like a coin flip on paper: Payton Tolle, one of the lone bright spots in a shredded Boston rotation, against Noah Schultz, a rookie lefty the White Sox are still trying to figure out. First pitch went off at 6:40 PM CT with Chicago trying to keep pace atop the AL Central and Boston just trying to find any kind of rhythm under its new manager.

Missed badly — Boston's offense blew the game open with 4 runs in the 9th and Schultz's shaky form was exactly the risk that hit.

Pregame

The White Sox came in at plus money as the home team, which says the market still isn't fully buying Chicago despite sitting atop the division. Backing the home side here leans on Chicago's overall form and lineup depth carrying it through a rough individual matchup. It's a bet on the season-long track record over one Tuesday against a rookie White Sox arm.

Tolle came in off a rough outing against Washington where he lasted just 3 innings, and Schultz wasn't much sharper his last time out against Baltimore. Neither guy has had a season defined by consistency, and with the Red Sox down Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Johan Oviedo, Kutter Crawford and Connelly Early — basically half a rotation — Tolle's outings carry more weight than his 4-6 record suggests.

Chicago, for its part, has been the story of the first half of the season, climbing to the top of the AL Central after years of irrelevance under manager Will Venable. But this White Sox lineup was without Munetaka Murakami all night and down Everson Pereira and Austin Hays too, thinning out a group that's carried its power surge from names like Colson Montgomery and Miguel Vargas.

Boston rolled into Chicago on a 3-game winning streak after sweeping the Angels, scoring 5, 8 and 7 runs in that stretch. That's a different look than the team that got outscored 18-3 across its previous 2 losses to Washington. Whether that carries over or was just a soft schedule against a bad Angels club was the question hanging over this one.

It didn't take long to get an answer. Andruw Monasterio and Ceddanne Rafaela both went deep early, and Boston tacked on runs in the 2nd and 4th before the Red Sox blew it open with a 4-run 9th to turn a competitive game into a laugher.

Schultz lasted into the game but never found his command, and the White Sox bullpen couldn't stop the bleeding once Boston's lineup got going. For a team that's built its surprise season on timely pitching and clutch execution, this was the kind of night that reminds you they're still 47-42 and not immune to a bad one.

The final only tells part of it — 11 hits to 4, 0 errors on either side, and a 9th inning that turned a manageable deficit into an 8-1 rout. For Boston, it's a signal that the Angels series wasn't a mirage. For Chicago, it's a reminder that first place doesn't make every night easy.
