Gray (14-3, 2.65 ERA) took the ball looking to build on a strong turn against Toronto, and he drew Jared Jones (2-4, 4.78 ERA), a talented arm who's been chasing consistency all season after a midseason elbow scare interrupted his year.

Gray delivered exactly what the pick banked on, cruising to a shutout while Jones got tagged with the loss, and Boston's bats finally woke up in a 4-0 final. The bear case about a cold Red Sox lineup held for most of the night before the offense broke through late, but it never mattered — Gray's outing made the result academic well before that.

Pregame

Boston's the moneyline pick here off Gray alone — a 2.79 ERA arm against a Pittsburgh lineup that's shown real thump lately is a mismatch most nights, even accounting for the offense's cold spell. Jones is talented but was just torched for 8 earned runs in his last start, and the shrinking pitch mix is a real red flag against a lineup that's seen him before this season.

Jones took the mound without Nick Gonzales in the lineup — the third baseman was scratched with a facial contusion after taking a pitch off the helmet a day earlier — while Boston still has no timetable for Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford or Johan Oviedo, four starters all parked on the 60-day injured list. Boston went off as a modest favorite, a number that reflected just how thin Pittsburgh's lineup card looked without its best contact bat.

None of that ended up mattering much. Gray was in control from the jump, and Pittsburgh never strung together the kind of rally that would've made the number interesting.

Boston had dropped 4 of its last 5 under interim manager Chad Tracy before this one, so a shutout on the road was exactly the get-right game this club needed — proof that even with the rotation stripped down to Gray, this pitching staff can still flip a switch. Wilyer Abreu got things going with a solo homer, and Boston tacked on insurance late to put it out of reach.

Pittsburgh had won 2 straight before this one and looked like a team building some momentum — until Jones ran into trouble again. He's leaned hard on his fastball and slider his last several turns, and hitters are starting to catch up to the pattern; this was another example of a promising arm searching for the version of himself that showed up back in July.

Gray's night was the story. He kept the ball on the ground, missed enough bats to stay out of trouble, and left Pittsburgh with almost nothing to build on. For a Red Sox team that's spent all August patching together a rotation, that's the kind of outing that buys everyone else a little breathing room.
