Payton Tolle (5-6, 3.11 ERA) got the ball for Boston looking to cap the sweep, going up against Zach Thornton (0-1, 2.93 ERA) as the Mets tried to salvage something out of a miserable weekend at 1:40 PM ET.

Boston's win streak carried through with a 3-2 outright win, the bull case playing out exactly as drawn up.

Pregame

Boston came in priced as road favorites off a run that's now hit 9 straight, and the Tolle-led rotation has been good enough to make that price stick even with a lineup missing key bats. New York's pitching has flashed at times, but a team playing .417 ball at home isn't the side to trust when the margins get thin.

New York took the field without Bo Bichette, who's day-to-day with leg and ankle soreness after fouling balls off himself in Atlanta the weekend before — a real loss for a lineup that's leaned on his .320 average over his last 25 games. Boston, meanwhile, is running out a rotation that's missing five starters to injury, and the market priced the Red Sox as road favorites anyway.

That gap between the records — Boston clawing back toward .500, New York buried at 40-56 — didn't show up early. The Mets grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first and held a 2-0 edge into the sixth. But this Red Sox club has made a habit of finding a way, and Sunday was no different.

Boston has won 9 straight now under interim manager Chad Tracy, a run that's included a sweep in the Bronx and now one at Citi Field, and it's turned a rookie-heavy roster into one of the hotter teams in baseball almost overnight.

Willson Contreras' suspension got trimmed from 7 games to 5, but Boston's pitching staff is still running thin with Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, Johan Oviedo, Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez all out. Tolle has been the one arm making all of that easier to stomach, becoming the first Red Sox starter since Dennis Eckersley in 1978 to log four outings of 6-plus shutout innings before turning 24.

New York actually out-hit Boston 6-4 on the day, but two errors and a late collapse let the Red Sox tie it in the ninth and win it in extra innings — the kind of gut-punch finish that's become a theme for an Andy Green-led club still searching for answers at 40-56.
