Boston didn't even bother with a real starter. Eduardo Rivera, up from Triple-A Worcester and sporting a spotless 0.00 ERA because he'd barely pitched in the big leagues, got the ball as an opener with a rotation that's lost Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Ranger Suarez, Connelly Early and Johan Oviedo to injury. Across the diamond, Freddy Peralta and his 4.66 ERA took the mound for a Mets team hoping its supposed ace could finally look like one.

Boston cruised to a 4-0 shutout — the moneyline pick cashed easily as the win streak hit 8.

Pregame

We backed the Red Sox price at plus-134 before first pitch, and even as it tightened toward plus-126, that number still undersold a team that had won its previous 7 in a row walking into Citi Field. Sharp money was thin here but what little tracked leaned Boston. Facing a Mets club that just fired its manager and is bracing to sell, the value was on the road side.

New York's lineup came in banged up too, with Bo Bichette dealing with leg and ankle soreness that had interim manager Andy Green watching closely. Add in Willson Contreras still serving a suspension in Boston's camp and Mark Vientos freshly on the shelf with a fractured hand for the Mets, and neither dugout was working with a full deck at 4:10 PM ET.

The bigger picture made this feel lopsided before a pitch was thrown. New York fired Carlos Mendoza mid-season and handed the reins to Green on an interim basis, and with the Mets sitting well outside the race, front-office chatter has them gearing up to be sellers before the trade deadline. Boston, despite still sitting under .500, had been playing like a completely different team for two weeks straight.

It played out just like the recent trend suggested. A. Monasterio delivered the big blow, a 2-run shot in the 4th that snapped a scoreless tie, and Boston tacked on 2 more in the 8th to put it away. Rivera and the Red Sox bullpen made it stand up, and Peralta's control issues — he's walked 3-plus batters in a game 6 times this year — never let the Mets offense find any rhythm against Boston's pitching staff.

Final score: Red Sox 4, Mets 0. That's 8 wins in a row for Boston and a 6th shutout loss trend piling onto a Mets season that's already spiraling toward a teardown. For New York, this one just adds another data point to the case that August 3 can't come fast enough.
