Sonny Gray took the ball for Boston with a chance to push the Red Sox's win streak to 6, and he did exactly what a 10-1, 2.59 ERA arm is supposed to do against a team scuffling for a spark. Across town, Nolan McLean tried to give the Mets a stopper after a brutal 24 hours, coming off a strong 6-2 outing of his own against the Braves five days earlier. First pitch went off at 7:50 PM ET with Boston chasing its 6th straight win.

Gray delivered exactly as advertised, and the Red Sox cruised to a 6-2 win to cash the moneyline.

Pregame

Boston came in priced up after a 5-game win streak, and Sonny Gray on the mound was about as safe a bet as this market offers with a 2.59 ERA and a 10-1 record. The Mets have talent but keep finding ways to shoot themselves in the foot, and losing Vientos the night before only made backing New York a tougher sell. This was value on a hot team with its ace on the bump.

The Mets walked into this one already down a hitter — Mark Vientos fractured his right hand on a 92.2 mph Michael Wacha hit-by-pitch the night before, an injury that's expected to keep him out for weeks and complicates an already thin lineup under interim manager Andy Green. Boston, meanwhile, is dealing with rotation attrition of its own: Connelly Early and Ranger Suarez are both freshly on the 15-day IL, which puts even more weight on nights like this one from Gray.

None of that mattered much once the game actually started. Gray was efficient and in control from the jump, and Boston's lineup did the rest — a first-inning double from Yoshida, a couple of big swings late, and a bullpen that didn't blink. The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 12 under Chad Tracy, and this one fit the pattern of a team that's figured something out at exactly the right time.

Gray went 6 innings, allowed just 1 earned run and struck out 3 en route to his 11th win of the season, continuing arguably the best individual stretch on either roster. McLean wasn't bad himself — 6 innings, 2 earned, 7 strikeouts — but a two-run first put the Mets in an early hole, and Anthony Seigler added a homer in the 7th before Wilyer Abreu broke it open with a two-run shot in the 9th. Brett Baty's solo blast in the bottom of the 9th was too little, too late for New York.

The final score tells the story cleanly enough: Boston out-hit New York 11-10 and cashed in the extra chances, while the Mets bullpen — Minter, Senga, Perez, Curry — couldn't slow down a lineup that's been finding barrels all week. It's a fourth straight series win for a Red Sox team that looked buried a few weeks ago, and it leaves the Mets searching for answers with their trade deadline calculus getting messier by the day.
