Payton Tolle (7-6, 3.11 ERA) took the ball looking to right a sinking ship, opposite Max Scherzer (1-4, 6.81 ERA), who's been trying to hold down a rotation spot on August 13. Tolle's last time out he punched out 14 without issuing a walk, and Boston needed every bit of that swing-and-miss stuff against a Blue Jays team that had won 3 straight.

The pick cashed easily behind a shutout. Tolle's swing-and-miss bull case showed up in full, and the bear case about Boston's skid and Toronto's recent series lead never mattered once the Blue Jays' bats went silent.

Pregame

Boston's still the moneyline favorite here even after dropping the first 3 of this series, and Tolle's electric last outing is the reason why — the Red Sox are betting their best arm can be the stopper their bullpen hasn't been. The price has drifted from -168 down to -140, which tells you the market's been chipping away at Boston's edge as the losses piled up, but the number still says Sox.

Toronto had taken the first 3 games of this series from Boston, but its pitching depth has been fraying fast — Trey Yesavage needs surgery for a torn meniscus, Jameson Taillon just landed on the 15-day IL with forearm tendinitis, and closer Yimi Garcia was already ruled out for the season with thoracic outlet syndrome. Scherzer was left to soak up innings for a staff with little margin for error, and Boston went off as road favorites at Rogers Centre as a result.

None of that mattered once the Blue Jays' bats went cold. Boston plated a run in the first, and although both offenses stayed quiet through the middle innings, the Red Sox pulled away late while Toronto never got anything going against Boston's arms.

Boston's skid — and the sweep Toronto had going in this series — ended with the loudest inning of the day. The Red Sox tacked on 4 runs in the 8th to turn a tight one-run edge into a laugher, then padded it with 2 more in the 9th, finishing with 10 hits against a Blue Jays lineup that could only scratch out 2 the other way. Toronto's lone error opened the door a little wider.

The loss lands at a rough time for a Blue Jays club still clinging to long-shot wild-card hopes, and it came the same day Boston placed reliever Garrett Whitlock on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation — a fresh complication for a Red Sox bullpen already missing Zack Kelly for the year. Neither club walked away from this one fully healthy.

Still, for a Boston team that had dropped the first 3 of this very series, a full shutout on the road is exactly the answer interim manager Chad Tracy has been asking his group to grind out.
