Gray (14-2, 2.79 ERA) came in off one of his best starts of the year, a 6-inning, 8-strikeout shutout of the White Sox, and Toronto countered with Taillon (2-6, 5.68 ERA), still trying to find his footing after coming over from the Cubs at the trade deadline. First pitch was set for 7:07 PM ET at Rogers Centre, with Gray's dominant recent form against Taillon's shakier one setting up as the clearest edge on paper.

Gray was every bit the ace we paid for — 6 innings, both runs charged to him, nothing resembling a meltdown — and Boston still lost. The offense that had already dropped 2 straight coming in made it 3, unable to solve a Toronto bullpen anchored by Louis Varland's 25th save, so the pitching case held up and the lineup case didn't.

Pregame

Boston's price on this one has actually come down from -169 to -152, which usually means the market's finding a fairer number rather than the Red Sox losing steam — and sharp money has still piled onto Boston, with the largest tracked bet landing on the Sox. With Gray on the mound and a healthier overall roster, this is a clean lean toward the favorite.

Both rosters are banged up in ways that shape who's even available. Boston is still without Triston Casas (wrist surgery), Trevor Story, Roman Anthony and most of its rotation depth, though interim manager Chad Tracy said catcher Adley Rutschman is expected off the injured list as soon as Tuesday. Toronto, meanwhile, is missing Trey Yesavage, Jose Berrios and Bowden Francis from the rotation and had already lost Luis Urias for two weeks with a quad issue — the kind of attrition that put extra pressure on Taillon to eat innings.

None of that mattered much once the game actually got going. Gray settled into his usual rhythm working off the fastball-sweeper combo that's carried his whole season, and Toronto had to manufacture instead of blow the doors off.

Charles McAdoo cracked a solo homer in the fifth to open the scoring, and Andres Gimenez added an RBI single in the sixth to make it 2-0. The bigger story came in the fourth, when Taillon left with right forearm discomfort after striking out 3 and allowing just 1 hit and 3 walks — a concerning exit for a guy still auditioning for a rotation spot down the stretch. Boston finally got on the board in the seventh when Anthony Seigler came around to score, but it was too little against a Toronto bullpen that never cracked.

Louis Varland slammed the door for his 25th save, and that bullpen strength ended up being the actual difference — Toronto got saved by its relief corps on a night its starter didn't finish the fourth. For Boston, Gray did his job and still walked away with nothing to show for it, extending a lineup slump that had already cost the Red Sox their previous 2 games.

Taillon's forearm scare is the thing to watch now — Toronto can't afford to lose another arm with its rotation already stretched thin by Yesavage, Berrios and Francis all out. Boston, for its part, gets Rutschman back as soon as Tuesday, which at least gives an offense that's gone cold one real jolt of reinforcement.
