Freddy Peralta (5-9, 4.99) makes his first start in a Rays uniform after Tampa Bay grabbed him from the Mets right before the deadline to fill the rotation hole Shane McClanahan left with his back injury. Colorado counters with rookie right-hander Gabriel Hughes (0-3, 3.33), who's been miscast by his win-loss record all year and gets a shot at a lineup that just hung 13 runs on his own team.

Tampa Bay is the better team top to bottom, and adding Peralta at the deadline signals they're not letting a rough patch derail a division-leading season. Colorado is a rebuilding club playing out a lost year, and Hughes making just his handful of career start against a lineup that dropped 13 runs on the Rockies' staff is a tough ask. The price reflects a real gap, but that gap is real.

Peralta didn't pitch particularly well in his final Mets outing, working just 4 innings against the Dodgers, and a debut at Coors Field is about as unforgiving a spot as exists for a pitcher trying to find his footing with a new club. Hughes, for his part, has actually been the more stable arm lately relative to expectations — a 3.33 ERA is a legitimately good number for any Rockies starter, let alone a rookie a few years removed from Tommy John surgery, even if the results in the loss column haven't followed.

Tampa Bay's lineup has carried this team through the middle of the summer, and this series has already shown what it's capable of doing to a shaky pitching staff — the Rays scored 13 in the series opener. Colorado's offense has had its own bursts, dropping 12 and 8 runs in wins over Kansas City just days ago, so neither pitching staff walks in with much margin for error.

The bigger picture: the Rays are playing meaningful August baseball, sitting near the top of the AL East, while the Rockies are grinding through another lost season, still hunting for any sustained traction beyond three wins in a five-game stretch. That gap in stakes is exactly why Tampa Bay went out and got a starter instead of standing pat.

Injuries loom over both rosters. Tampa Bay is already without Jake Fraley, McClanahan and a stack of bullpen arms, which is part of why adding a starter felt necessary even for a first-place team. Colorado's absences run just as deep, with Jose Quintana and Chase Dollander both out for extended stretches, thinning a rotation that already leans on unproven arms like Hughes to eat innings.

None of that changes the shape of this series: a contender with more talent up and down the roster against a rebuilding club playing out the string in a park that turns even shaky starts into track meets. Coors Field has a way of making any pitching matchup feel secondary to the scoreboard, and both of these teams have shown they're capable of piling on runs in bunches.
