Ian Seymour and Michael Lorenzen took the ball for an early-evening tilt at altitude, and neither one figured to keep the ball in the yard for very long given where they were pitching. Seymour, a converted reliever who's settled into Tampa Bay's rotation over the past two months, came in trending up after flirting with a no-hitter against Kansas City back in June. Lorenzen came in dragging one of the league's ugliest lines behind him.

The Rays cashed comfortably, winning 13-9 behind Caminero's two homers and six strong innings from Seymour, exactly the class-gap case we made pre-game. The bear case about Colorado's win streak never materialized into a real threat — Lorenzen's home struggles undid any momentum the Rockies carried in.

Pregame

Tampa Bay is the class of this matchup and the price reflects it — a top-of-the-AL lineup against a last-place club getting a shaky start from Michael Lorenzen. The Rays just added rotation depth at the deadline and have the division largely in hand, which is exactly the kind of spot where a good team travels well. Colorado's recent stretch is real, but it came against Kansas City, not a club playing meaningful August baseball.

The Rays showed up banged up. Jake Fraley's hernia sent him to the 60-day IL, Shane McClanahan's back tightness knocked him out of his last start early, and Cole Sulser's back spasms have him shelved too. Tampa Bay leaned on its lineup instead, with Junior Caminero's power bat doing the heavy lifting behind Seymour. The Rockies, for what it's worth, walked in on a 3-game winning streak after sweeping the Royals, so this wasn't a team just going through the motions at home.

Colorado's win streak was built on pitching — Kyle Freeland tossed his first career complete game in that sweep — but none of that magic carried over to Lorenzen. Hunter Goodman and Ezequiel Tovar gave the home crowd a reason to stick around anyway, both connecting for homers before the night was through.

This one turned into exactly the track meet the total number suggested it could be. The Rays jumped out early, scoring seven runs across the first three innings, and never really let go of the rope even as Colorado clawed back with a four-run eighth. Fifteen hits apiece, two Rockies errors, and a final score that looked more like a football game than a Tuesday matinee — Coors Field lived up to its reputation.

Seymour worked around the thin air well enough to pick up the win, striking out nine while Lorenzen's night ended early yet again, extending a brutal stretch that's made him one of the toughest outs in the league to watch from a Rockies uniform. Cedric Mullins chipped in a couple of hits and kept his stolen-base total climbing, while Caminero's power surge continues to look like the real deal for a Tampa Bay club still very much alive in a playoff race.

For Colorado, the loss doesn't erase the good vibes from the weekend sweep, but it's a reminder of how far the pitching staff still has to go before this team is competitive on a nightly basis. For the Rays, it's a get-well game against a losing club that padded a middling road record without needing much from the injured list to do it.
