Sonny Gray got the ball for the finale looking to close out the sweep, and Shane McClanahan tried to be the guy who finally slowed Boston down. First pitch went off at 1:35 PM ET with the Red Sox riding an 11-game winning streak and the Rays desperate to snap a run of ugly baseball.

The pick missed — Tampa Bay's bats stayed silent and Boston cruised behind Gray, extending the streak the Rays couldn't solve all series.

Pregame

We backed the Rays at plus money on the strength of their AL East standing and a McClanahan outing that looked like a bounce-back spot. Boston's roll made that a tough hold, but the price reflected real value on a first-place club getting live odds against a shorthanded home roster.

McClanahan came in off a strong outing against the Yankees and Gray had been nearly untouchable all year, but neither pitcher's track record mattered much once the game actually started. Boston's lineup has been finding barrels against everybody lately, while Tampa Bay's has gone cold at the worst possible time, and this one played out true to form.

The Rays came in still holding a share of first place in the AL East, which made the scale of this collapse even stranger. A team good enough to be atop the division has now lost 5 straight, and Sunday's finale did nothing to change the narrative.

Boston chipped away early and then broke it open, tacking on 3 runs in the 3rd and 2 more in the 5th to put it away. Gray cruised behind the offense, and Tampa Bay's 2 errors in the field didn't help a lineup that was already struggling to scratch out runs.

The injury sheet explains part of why Tampa Bay's lineup has looked so thin. Losing Gavin Lux and Jake Fraley off rehab assignments in the same week gutted the outfield depth, and it's left the Rays leaning hard on Junior Caminero and Yandy Diaz with little margin for a slump like this one.

Boston, for what it's worth, isn't exactly whole either — Chad Tracy is running this team with half his projected rotation and multiple infielders on the shelf. It just hasn't mattered. An 11-game winning streak turned into 12, and the Rays now have to regroup fast before this skid turns into something bigger than a bad week.
