Mason Englert got the ball for Tampa Bay in the nightcap, added to the roster as the Rays' 27th man for the twin bill and tasked with keeping a rough day from spiraling further. Boston countered with Eduardo Rivera, still hunting his first career decision, with first pitch at 7:10 PM ET.

Boston's offense buried Tampa Bay 10-0, validating the red-hot-streak bear and sinking the away-side pick outright.

Pregame

We took the Rays at plus money knowing they're still the first-place club in this division, and that price was the value side on paper. Boston's been a buzzsaw for weeks, but backing a top-of-the-standings team at plus odds against a club that was two games under .500 not long ago is the right process even when it doesn't pay off in a single game.

The two rosters are dealing with very different problems. Tampa Bay is already down Gavin Lux and Jake Fraley in the outfield, both pulled off rehab assignments this month, thinning a group that still sits atop the AL East. Boston is missing half a rotation — Garrett Crochet, Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford and Johan Oviedo all shelved — and keeps winning anyway under interim manager Chad Tracy.

None of that mattered once the game got rolling. Rivera and the Boston bullpen shut the door completely, and the offense did the rest against an Englert start that never found a rhythm.

Final: Red Sox 10, Rays 0. Boston piled up 15 hits and blew the game open with a 6-run sixth inning, turning what started as a tight game into a laugher by the middle frames. Tampa Bay managed just 3 hits and committed an error, unable to push a single run across against a Boston staff that's been the backbone of this stretch.

This is the same script Boston's been running for weeks now. Every version of this Red Sox team — hurt or healthy, under a manager who was coaching Triple-A ball two months ago — keeps finding ways to win, arriving at Friday's twin bill on a 9-game roll before piling on another lopsided one in the nightcap. The Rays, by contrast, looked like a first-place club that ran straight into a buzzsaw on the road.

Tampa Bay still has the division cushion to lean on, and injuries like Lux and Fraley are the kind of thing a deep roster survives over 162 games. But getting run off the field in a doubleheader nightcap by a team playing this well right now is the sort of result that lingers, especially with the Yankees just 3 games back in the standings.
