Drew Rasmussen (10-5, 2.91 ERA) takes the ball for Tampa Bay against Logan Gilbert (8-6, 3.46 ERA) for Seattle, first pitch set for 6:45 PM PT at T-Mobile Park. Rasmussen is coming off one of his best starts of the year, and Gilbert has been steady all summer even when the results behind him haven't matched the effort.

Tampa Bay's the pick here even at a near pick'em price, and that's the value — a team playing at the best-record-in-the-league level shouldn't be this close to a coin flip against a club that's lost its last game and cratered over its last stretch. Seattle's price implies a much more even fight than the current form supports. Back the Rays to win outright.

Both arms are trending the right way, which makes the gap between these two rosters the real story. The Rays are stacked with healthy, productive bats even with a rotation that's been picked apart by injuries, while the Mariners are trying to piece together a lineup around two significant absences up the middle and in the outfield. That disparity in position-player depth is doing a lot of the work in how oddsmakers have priced this one.

Tampa Bay went out and added at the deadline instead of standing pat, a signal from the front office that this group is built for October, not just a good summer. Seattle, meanwhile, is dealing with the opposite reality — a team that was in the mix a couple weeks ago and has since watched the race pull away from it.

The Rays haven't just been winning, they've been dominant doing it, capping their series with Colorado by outscoring the Rockies across the set and getting a lineup-wide effort at the plate. Seattle's version of the last week looks nothing like that. Back-to-back shutout losses to Detroit, including an 0-11 blowout, are the kind of results that erase a team's margin for error fast, and the Mariners have felt every bit of it in the standings.

J.P. Crawford's wrist injury takes Seattle's everyday shortstop off the field right as the offense needs stability the most, and Luke Raley's forearm issue removes another middle-of-the-order piece for good. Tampa Bay's issues are mostly bullpen and rotation-depth problems — real ones, with McClanahan and Pepiot both out long-term — but they haven't stopped the position-player group from carrying the team. There's also a small subplot here: Ben Williamson, day-to-day for Tampa, came up through Seattle's system before landing with the Rays, so there's a little bit of a homecoming flavor to this one even if he's questionable to play.

None of that changes the shape of this matchup. The Rays show up as the better team in essentially every column that matters right now, and Seattle's job is simply to avoid getting run off the field again.
