TLDR: One of these franchises is about to win its first World Series. Milwaukee hasn't been to the Fall Classic since 1982, Tampa Bay is 0-for-2 in it, and Game 1 is Friday, October 23 at American Family Field.

Two franchises still chasing their first title open the World Series in Milwaukee: the 103-win Brewers, rested after a 4-game NLCS sweep of the Dodgers, and the 98-win Rays, 3 days removed from beating Cleveland in 6. Neither Game 1 starter is confirmed. Misiorowski is projected for Milwaukee and Rasmussen for Tampa Bay, with ALCS MVP Freddy Peralta, a former Brewer, expected in Game 2. Both pitching staffs have held opponents to 4 runs or fewer in every recent game, so Game 1 projects as a low-scoring opener.

Tampa Bay Rays
  • Peralta: 1 run over 5.1 in ALCS clincher
  • Caminero, Díaz both homered in pennant clincher
  • Staff allowed 3 runs or fewer in last 5 games
  • McClanahan out for the postseason (forearm)
  • ALCS MVP Peralta projected for Game 2, not Game 1
  • Opens on the road in Milwaukee
Milwaukee Brewers
  • Swept the Dodgers 4-0 in the NLCS
  • Misiorowski held LA to 1 run in NLCS Game 1
  • Bullpen fully rested after a week off
  • Week-long layoff since the NLCS clincher
  • Woodruff's shoulder status still unresolved
  • Offense scored 2 and 3 runs in 2 of its last 5 wins

The pitcher card still says TBD on both sides, and neither club has officially named its Game 1 starter. MLB.com's early reporting has the Brewers going back to Jacob Misiorowski, who has started Game 1 of both the NLDS and the NLCS and held the Dodgers to 1 run over 4.1 innings in the NLCS opener. On the Tampa Bay side, Drew Rasmussen projects for Game 1, with Freddy Peralta in line for Game 2. Treat both as projections until the clubs confirm them. If it does go Rasmussen in Game 1, he'd be facing the organization that drafted him in 2018 and later traded him to the Rays.

That Peralta storyline is the best one in the series, and it may have to wait until Saturday. He spent 2018-25 turning into one of the best starters in baseball in a Brewers uniform. Then he got traded, and he just won ALCS MVP for Tampa Bay, including 5.1 innings of 1-run ball in the 7-3 clincher over Cleveland. The Rays will also be without Shane McClanahan, who won't pitch again this postseason with a forearm injury. Milwaukee doesn't have home-field advantage by accident. It won 103 games, and it's the home favorite in Game 1.

The schedule matters here. The Brewers finished off their 4-game NLCS sweep of the Dodgers on October 15, so they'll have had a full week off by first pitch. The Rays needed 6 games to get past Cleveland and won the pennant on October 19, so they get 3 days. That means a fully rested Milwaukee bullpen against a Tampa Bay team that's still in rhythm. Which of those matters more is the first real question of the series.

Both teams got here on pitching. Over each club's last 5 games, nobody scored more than 4 runs on Milwaukee and nobody scored more than 3 on Tampa Bay. Brewers pitchers held the Dodgers to 1 run in each of the first 2 NLCS games. Tampa Bay's offense has been more streaky than steady. In the clincher it scored 3 early and then put the game away late on 2-run homers from Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz. Against a Milwaukee staff this good, the Rays probably need to win the same way: grind out early runs and wait for one swing.

The injury news to watch is Brandon Woodruff. He told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that "it's gonna be hard to keep me off that roster." Other reporting says he's still working his way back from major shoulder surgery. If he makes the roster, Milwaukee gets another arm for the later games in St. Petersburg. If he doesn't, nothing changes from the staff that just swept Los Angeles. The Brewers won 15 of the 28 career meetings between these clubs, including 2 of 3 in Milwaukee earlier this season. First pitch Friday is 7:00 PM CT.
