Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays

Ian Seymour draws Shane Bieber for the getaway-day finale, and neither pitcher enters with gaudy numbers, but the stories behind them couldn't be more different. Seymour opened the season with a disaster start and no rotation depth behind him after Ryan Pepiot's season-ending hip surgery, and has quietly turned into one of Tampa Bay's more reliable arms since. Bieber is still working his way back from a rocky spring elbow issue that delayed his 2026 debut into late June.

Bieber's last time out was actually his best of the year — 6 shutout innings against the White Sox with 6 strikeouts on 80 pitches. That's the version of Bieber Toronto needs if this rotation is going to stabilize, because right now his 1-1 record and 5.70 ERA reflect a guy still finding his post-injury form more than a finished product. On the other side, Fraley and Lux both had rehab assignments halted this month, which means Kevin Cash still doesn't have his full outfield picture back, and Taylor Walls is out of Thursday's lineup as well.

None of that has mattered much this week. The Rays have outscored Toronto 23-5 across the first three games of this set, including a 21-hit, 12-run explosion Tuesday that also saw Yandy Díaz collect his 1,000th career hit. Tampa Bay looked dead in the water a week ago after dropping two straight to Boston, and instead they've ripped off 3 in a row to push their record to 59-42.

For Toronto, this is about as low as it's gotten. The Blue Jays have lost 4 of their last 5 and fell to 46-56, and manager John Schneider hasn't hidden his frustration with an offense that keeps going quiet at the worst times. Addison Barger and Lenyn Sosa remain shut down, Jonatan Clase is out, and now Jonatan Clase's absence leaves an already thin outfield picture even thinner. A team that opted Bieber back in hoping his return would be a turning point instead finds itself getting run off its own field.

The Rays have every incentive to keep the foot down. A sweep validates that they're the team that stumbled into a bad week against Boston rather than the team currently under .500 at home wearing Toronto's colors. For the Blue Jays, avoiding the sweep is as much about not letting things spiral further as it is about the standings — Schneider has openly said this group has to start winning games, and it's hard to find a worse spot to start than getting run out of your own building for a fourth straight day.
