Freddy Peralta looked nothing like the pitcher who won 17 games a year ago in his Rays debut, getting shelled for 7 earned runs over 3.2 innings against Colorado. He's back on the mound at 6:40 PM PT looking for a bounce-back against Jacob Lopez, who's quietly turned his season around after a midseason trip to Triple-A and a renewed focus on his slider.

The Rays are the play here — a first-place club riding a 5-game streak against a team still 24 games under .500. Peralta's ugly Rays debut is a real concern, but Tampa Bay's lineup has been bailing out shaky pitching all week, and that depth is the difference against a patched-together Athletics roster.

Tampa Bay's rotation is thinner than a 71-46 record suggests. Griffin Jax and Shane McClanahan are both shelved, which is part of why a scuffling arm like Peralta is getting the ball tonight. The Athletics, meanwhile, are still without Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers and Brent Rooker, so the lineup that's carried them the last few days needs to keep doing it without much reinforcement on the way.

That's the actual tension here — a division leader on autopilot against a last-place club that just found a pulse for the first time in a while.

Sacramento's version of a good week looked like this: an 8-run blowout loss to Boston, then back-to-back wins to close the series, capped by Max Muncy's go-ahead double off Aroldis Chapman in the ninth. Tyler Soderstrom has been part of that mini-surge and just locked in long-term with a contract extension, which is about as close as this roster gets to a building block. It's not nothing for a team that's been buried in the AL West basement most of the summer — it's just a long way from erasing a 24-game gap in the standings.

Tampa Bay is playing from a position most teams in baseball would kill for, but the margins are thinner than the win streak lets on. This is what an AL East leader looks like when it's absorbing injuries and still finding ways to win with a shaky spot starter — which makes tonight less a formality and more a test of exactly how deep this roster really is.
