Quantrill (3-3, 3.84) came in fresh off the worst start of his season, a six-run disaster against the Braves where he didn't survive the fifth inning. Griffin Jax (6-7, 3.74), meanwhile, was rolling — six innings, one run, five strikeouts in his last time out against Toronto. On paper this looked like a mismatch in Tampa's favor at first pitch, 6:40 PM ET.

This one missed — Texas's bullpen shut the door and the Rays' offense never got going, scoring just once.

Pregame

Tampa Bay was the right side to lean on paper — best record in the AL, Jax coming off a gem, and a Rangers rotation running on fumes. We took the Rays at -166 on the moneyline, and even with the final result going the other way, nothing about their underlying form said this price was wrong pregame.

The Rangers are dealing with a rotation that's basically held together with tape. Jack Leiter's still working back from an ankle issue, Cody Bradford and Jordan Montgomery are both rehabbing arm injuries, and that's what pushed Quantrill into a rotation spot he wasn't necessarily built for. Corey Seager's back is finally trending the right way too — he took live BP over the weekend and kicked off a rehab assignment with Double-A Frisco on Tuesday, which matters a lot for a Texas lineup that's been thin at short. Tampa Bay isn't exactly healthy either; the Rays have half a bullpen on the 60-day IL and lost both Jake Fraley and Gavin Lux to setbacks on their rehab attempts this month.

None of that stopped the Rays from being the best team in the American League for most of July, and Tuesday's line still had Tampa as a solid favorite. The board didn't move much pregame, but the total sitting near 8.5 with the under drawing more sharp-money attention than the over was a signal worth noting given how these two pitching staffs have trended.

Texas grabbed the lead early and never really let go, scratching across single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 7th and 8th while Tampa Bay's offense could only push one across in the 6th. It wasn't a artistic outing from either starter on paper, but the Rangers' pen did enough to protect a lead that felt fragile most of the night.

The Rays had won 4 of their previous 5 coming in and looked like a team playing with the calm of a division leader, but Tuesday was a reminder that even the AL's best can get outworked on a random Tuesday against a team scrapping for a wild-card spot. Texas is clinging to first in the AL West and every game like this one matters with the Aug. 3 trade deadline bearing down.

The injury boards for both sides are worth a glance too — Texas is missing four pitchers and two catchers, while Tampa's bullpen depth has been gutted by season-long absences. Neither team is at full strength, which makes nights like this one — where the shorter-handed club still finds a way — feel a little more instructive than the standings alone suggest.
