Sunday's rubber match came down to two arms trending in opposite directions. Cody Bradford took the ball for Texas carrying a tidy 2.93 ERA, while Jacob Lopez started for the A's with a much rougher 5.22 mark. First pitch went off at 1:05 PM PT at Sutter Health Park, with Sacramento's summer heat pushing 92 degrees by game time.

Lopez had actually been trending the right way, tossing 7 innings of 2-run ball against Tampa Bay in his last time out. Bradford, for his part, took the loss in his last start against the Angels despite going 7 strong innings himself. Both clubs are picking through beat-up rosters — Texas without deGrom, Eovaldi and Leiter, Oakland missing Kurtz, Soderstrom and Langeliers — which made lineup construction as much of a story as the arms on the mound.

None of that stopped either team from playing hard for position in a lost season. Texas sits under .500 at 61-64, still hanging around the periphery of the wild-card picture, while the A's, at 49-75, are mostly playing out the string in Sacramento. That gap didn't show up much in this series — the two split the first two meetings before Sunday's finale settled things.
