Gore (6-9, 4.43 ERA) gets the ball for Texas looking to snap the skid, and his last start showed real signs of life — 5.1 innings against the Angels with 9 strikeouts and just 1 earned run allowed. J.T. Ginn (8-6, 3.41) starts for the Athletics off 6 innings of 1-run ball against Boston, and first pitch at Sutter Health Park is set for 6:40 PM PT.

Texas is favored on the road at -131, and even mired in a 4-game skid that price makes sense — this is a roster with real talent, and Gore's last start (9 strikeouts, 1 earned run) was a reminder of why. Oakland is playing without Kurtz, Rooker and Langeliers, and Wilson's hand injury only thins the lineup further. Back the Rangers to right the ship.

The bigger story in Texas is the health of the rotation behind Gore. Jacob deGrom left Thursday's start against the Angels after just 2 innings with right triceps fatigue and is awaiting MRI results, while Nathan Eovaldi is already on the 15-day IL with elbow inflammation. Oakland has its own thing to monitor: shortstop Jacob Wilson exited the series opener with a bruised hand after getting hit by a 95 mph sinker, and while X-rays came back negative, he's day-to-day.

None of that stopped the Athletics from putting up 8 runs on the Rangers in that opener, a reminder that even a last-place club can get hot for a night. Texas is favored to bounce back, and the price reflects a real talent gap between a team hanging around .500 and one buried at the bottom of the AL West.

Texas is 1-4 in its last 5, having lost 4 straight, with the lone win in that stretch coming against the Angels. Oakland's form is scattered too — 2-3 in the last 5 — but the roster attrition explains a lot of it: Nick Kurtz is out for weeks after a thumb procedure, Brent Rooker is done for the season after knee surgery, and catcher Shea Langeliers is still working back from a knee procedure of his own.

That's a lot of lineup for a rebuilding club to replace, and it's part of why Texas is still the one with something to play for even at 60-63. A series win in Sacramento won't fix the Rangers' rotation problems, but it beats getting run out of town by the worst team in baseball.
