Nathan Eovaldi (10-8, 4.20 ERA) got the ball for Texas coming off a strong turn against Seattle, while Hunter Brown (2-1, 3.14 ERA) took the mound for Houston off a shutout outing against the White Sox. First pitch went off at 7:15 PM CT with first place on the line for both clubs.

Texas got run off the field 11-2, and the hot Houston club that was supposed to be the risk is exactly what beat them.

Pregame

Texas came in with the deeper rotation on paper and a half-game division lead, which made the Rangers the moneyline lean even on the road against a scorching Houston club. Eovaldi's track record in big spots is the whole case here. It's a bet on name-brand pitching over recent form.

The Astros haven't led the AL West since April 6, and their bullpen and lineup were finally whole enough to make a push. Correa is still working back from an ankle injury and Houston's rotation depth remains banged up with Mike Burrows and Spencer Arrighetti both out, but the group that took the field Friday had been the hottest team in baseball, winning 8 of its previous 9. Texas, meanwhile, is still waiting on Josh Jung's calf to cooperate and has four pitchers on extended IL stints, including Jordan Montgomery and Cody Bradford working back from elbow issues.

None of that mattered once the bats got going. Houston built a lead early, tacked more on in the fourth and fifth, then blew the game open late — the kind of night that turns a coin-flip division race into a laugher.

Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker went back-to-back in the bottom of the fifth to push the margin further, and Houston kept adding on with a four-run seventh that buried any hope of a Texas comeback. Brown was efficient again, and the Astros' pitching staff didn't let the Rangers' offense find any rhythm all night. It was the type of complete performance Houston needed after clawing back from a 20-31 start to even get into this race.

For Texas, it's the third loss in its last five and a reminder that this rotation — deGrom, Eovaldi, Gore and Rocker — still has to actually finish games for the offense to matter. The Rangers held the division for months; one bad night against a surging Houston club erased it.

With the trade deadline landing days later, this loss adds urgency for a Texas front office that's already been described as thin on financial flexibility. Houston, on the other hand, just got a signature win to validate the turnaround — and a reminder that with Alvarez raking and the rotation getting healthier, this division race isn't over.
