Cal Quantrill takes the ball for Texas looking to keep the Rangers from dropping consecutive games to a team 14 games under .500. George Klassen goes for the Angels trying to build on the one bright spot in an otherwise brutal week, with first pitch at 7:10 PM PT.

We're sticking with the Rangers here, and Quantrill's steady recent form backs it up — a 6-inning, 1-run outing his last time out is exactly the kind of floor Texas needs from its rotation right now. The Angels just aren't a club built to win series against a .500 team with Klassen struggling to find the zone. Texas is priced as a moneyline favorite and that price still looks fair given the talent gap.

Texas is dealing with a rotation that's thinner than it wants to be. Nathan Eovaldi landed on the 15-day IL with right posterior elbow inflammation, and Josh Jung's calf still hasn't let him do baseball activities. Quantrill has quietly been one of the more reliable arms left standing, coming off a start where he worked 6 innings and allowed just 1 earned run.

The Angels, meanwhile, are just trying to find anything that works. Los Angeles is buried at 46-74, and Klassen's 7.27 ERA is a big reason the staff has been picked apart lately. His last outing against Miami was a mess of control problems — 4 walks in 4 innings — even if the final line came back a no-decision.

Give the Angels credit for one thing: they didn't just roll over in this series. After dropping the opener, Los Angeles scratched out a 3-2 win to even things up, snapping a stretch where they'd been getting outscored badly against Miami. It's the kind of scrappy, low-event win a rebuilding team needs more of, even if it doesn't move the standings much.

Texas still has the deeper roster and the better arm on the mound, and at 60-60 they need results like this to stay in the wild-card conversation. The Angels have nothing to play for but pride and reps for young players — which sometimes makes them dangerous, but rarely makes them consistent.
