Andrew Painter got the ball for Philadelphia on Sunday looking nothing like a pitcher carrying a 6.43 ERA and a 2-8 record, at least not by the results of this series. Dean Kremer started for Minnesota off arguably his best outing of the year, 7 innings and just 1 earned run against Baltimore his last time out, and for three innings he looked every bit that pitcher again.

Philadelphia caught this finale without Trea Turner, who sat out with a bruised right knee and ankle, and without regular outfielder Derek Hill, who's been day-to-day. Minnesota's absences run even deeper — Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez, David Festa, Mick Abel and Cole Sands are all on the injured list, a rotation stripped down before the Twins ever took the mound this series. DraftKings still had Minnesota as home favorites on the moneyline.

That price didn't age well. The Twins jumped ahead early and had this game firmly in hand through 3 innings, but Philadelphia had already made a habit of chipping away at Minnesota pitching all weekend, and this finale went the same way.

A 4-run sixth pulled the Phillies within 1, and a 3-run eighth flipped the whole thing, turning a 5-0 hole into a 7-5 win. Philadelphia out-hit Minnesota 9-7 and played clean defense while the Twins committed an error, but the bigger story was a pitching staff that couldn't hold a lead it built early.

This wasn't a one-off. The Phillies had already taken the first 2 games of this set 7-1 and 9-1 before Sunday, so the finale completed a sweep that was lopsided from the start. Minnesota, playing without its best rotation pieces all series, simply never found an answer for a Philadelphia lineup that hit the ball hard from the first pitch to the last out of every game.

Philadelphia moves to 66-58 on a series that leaves little doubt about who the better club was this week. Minnesota falls to 60-64 and heads into its next stretch needing healthy arms more than anything else — the injured list, not the scoreboard, was the real story of this series.
