Aaron Nola and Taj Bradley took the mound at 6:30 PM CT in Dyersville with two very different seasons behind them. Nola came in dragging a 3-9 record and a 5.33 ERA, the kind of line that gets a $172 million starter questioned in his own city. Bradley arrived at 9-4 with a 3.98 ERA, the steadiest arm left in a Twins rotation that's been gutted by injuries.

The Phillies won outright and it wasn't particularly close, 7-1. Nola delivered exactly the bounce-back start the case argued for — 5 innings, 1 run, 9 strikeouts — while Bradley's rotation-carrying burden showed up as two homers allowed to Schwarber alone.

Pregame

We took the Phillies on the moneyline near even money, and the price hasn't moved much since. Philadelphia's lineup is deep enough to cover for a rough Nola start, and even a shaky outing from him doesn't sink a team that can score in bunches. Minnesota's thin rotation behind Bradley is the bigger long-term issue, and it tends to show the moment this game leaves his hands.

Minnesota's pitching depth has been in freefall for weeks. Joe Ryan landed on the IL with a left glute strain, and he's not walking back into a full staff — Mick Abel and David Festa are both likely done for the year after surgeries, and Pablo Lopez needs Tommy John. That's four rotation arms gone in a stretch, which is exactly why Bradley pitching deep into games matters so much for Minnesota right now.

Philadelphia had its own bullpen headaches walking in, with Caleb Kilian and Tanner Banks both shelved, but the story of this one wound up being the bats, not the arms. The market had leaned toward a track meet, with the total sitting at 8.5 and juice on the over — instead the Twins offense simply never showed up.

Schwarber took Bradley deep on the third pitch of the game, his 47th career leadoff homer, tying Curtis Granderson for 7th-most all-time, then added a second homer that carried out on the wind blowing toward the corn. Brandon Marsh piled on with a two-run shot to make it 7-1, and by the finish Philadelphia had rolled up 12 hits without an error.

Nola, for all the noise around his season line, was the best version of himself: 5 innings, 1 run allowed, 9 strikeouts. It's the continuation of a stretch where he's quietly pitched to something closer to a 4-ERA arm over his last several turns, even as the win column hasn't cooperated. Minnesota's lone run came off a solo homer, and after that the lineup that had taken 2 of 3 from Baltimore before this series went dark against an interim-managed Phillies club that's been playing its way back into shape since Don Mattingly took over in the dugout.

For the Phillies, it's a statement win at the sport's most theatrical stage — Hall of Famers walking out of the corn, Kevin Costner in the booth, and a lopsided final that had nothing to do with nostalgia. For the Twins, it's another reminder that a shredded rotation only stretches so far before the innings start costing runs.
