Wheeler (9-1, 2.18) drew Tarik Skubal for the rubber match at Comerica Park, first pitch 1:40 PM ET, with the series tied at a game apiece after Detroit blew out Philadelphia in the opener and the Phillies answered back the next night.

Busted hard — Detroit got shut out and Wheeler's dominance, the bear case all along, was exactly what beat this pick.

Pregame

We took the Tigers on the moneyline at -112, banking on Skubal's track record and a Detroit lineup that had been scoring in bunches all week. The home price made sense against a Phillies team that had been shaky on the road, even with Wheeler on the mound.

Skubal was still building back up after an offseason elbow procedure that cost him a spot on the All-Star roster, and he'd looked sharp doing it, riding a two-start winning streak with 9 strikeouts in each of his last three outings. The Tigers' lineup, missing Gleyber Torres and Wenceel Perez for months now, needed him to hold serve against a Phillies staff that had shut them down before.

Philadelphia came in banged up in its own outfield, with Johan Rojas and Adolis Garcia both out for extended stretches and Justin Crawford scratched with a knee issue Sunday. None of it mattered once Wheeler settled in — the price on the Phillies' arm was the story of this series before a single pitch got thrown Sunday.

Detroit had won 4 straight before dropping the series opener slugfest to Philly, a stretch that made this finale feel like a chance to steal the rubber game behind their ace. Instead Wheeler turned in another vintage outing, and the Tigers' offense — the same group that had put up 6, 6, 4 and 10 runs in its previous four games — never got untracked, managing just 2 hits all afternoon.

Detroit's injured list reads like a rebuilding roster's worst nightmare right now: Jackson Jobe and Justin Verlander both shelved for the season, Will Vest added this week with a stress fracture, Javier Baez and Trey Sweeney both done for the year. That's a lot of pitching depth and infield punch to replace, and it showed up in a lineup that couldn't scratch across a run against a pitcher clearly playing with a chip on his shoulder.

Philadelphia broke it open with a 4-run sixth after trading zeroes for five innings, and Wheeler cruised behind it, finishing off a Tigers lineup that had nothing going all day. It's the kind of statement start that keeps building the case for a Wheeler All-Star snub apology tour, and it sends the Phillies out of Detroit with a series win.

For the Tigers, it's back to the drawing board with Skubal still working his way back to full form and a battered roster that can't afford many more scoreless afternoons like this one.
