Alan Rangel got the ball for Philadelphia looking to build off a shaky last outing, while Chase Burns took the mound for Cincinnati riding the best stretch of his young career. First pitch was 7:10 PM ET, with Burns the far bigger name walking in — a 10-1 record and a 2.48 ERA will do that.

Lost — the Reds' bullpen-punishing middle innings blew this pick up despite Philadelphia's better overall record.

Pregame

We backed the Phillies to win outright off the strength of their overall season record and a lineup that had just torched Cincinnati's pitching a day earlier. The price moved a lot before first pitch, which should've been a signal the market was souring on Philadelphia's road form. It wasn't enough — Cincinnati's offense erupted and buried this pick early.

The Phillies activated reliever Lou Trivino off Triple-A Lehigh Valley this week, a needed boost for a bullpen already without Johan Rojas and Adolis Garcia, both done for months after elbow and lat surgeries. Cincinnati has its own list — Ke'Bryan Hayes, Blake Dunn and Dane Myers all out, plus relievers Tony Santillan and Graham Ashcraft on the shelf — so neither dugout was working with a full deck.

None of that mattered once the middle innings hit. The Reds turned a tight game into a rout with back-to-back multi-run frames, and Philadelphia's bullpen simply couldn't put out the fire.

The Phillies came in having split their last five, including that ugly 1-15 no-show in Kansas City sandwiched around a bounce-back win. Cincinnati had been just as uneven, alternating wins and losses all week, but a home crowd and Burns on the mound was supposed to be their best version of themselves — and for six innings, it was.

Cincinnati piled up 11 hits and shrugged off an error, breaking the game open with a five-run fourth and closing the door with four more in the sixth. Philadelphia scratched across single runs in bunches — the only quiet inning for either offense was the third — but it was never enough to answer the Reds' outbursts.

Burns' final line kept his ERA in the low 2s and his win total climbing toward All-Star numbers, while Rangel's rough return continues to raise questions about Philadelphia's back-of-rotation depth heading into the second half.
