Nola's 5.14 ERA is the headline, but the shape of it is worse. He'd dropped 3 of his prior 4 outings before grinding out 6 scoreless against the Marlins last time up. Manager Don Mattingly leaned on extra rest to try to reset him, and the Marlins start was the first sign that maybe it took. One outing doesn't fix a spring, though, and PNC is not exactly a sympathetic environment when the fastball command wanders.
Braxton Ashcraft is the other side of this coin. The 26-year-old is in his first full season as a starter and is sitting on a 2.77 ERA with a 51:14 K:BB through 48.2 innings. He's allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 7 of his 8 starts — second-best mark in the majors, behind only Clay Holmes. The Pirates have quietly stacked one of the better young rotations in the league, and Ashcraft is a big reason they're 24-20 and looking up at no one in the Central they can't catch.
The market agrees the Pirates have the edge — Pittsburgh sits at -133 with a fair win probability around 55.7%, and the total is parked at 8. That feels about right for an Ashcraft start against a Phillies lineup that's been without Trea Turner for multiple games. If Turner's still out of the lineup Friday, the under gets even more interesting.

Pittsburgh's injury list is the bigger story long-term — Jared Jones is rehabbing his way back, Joey Bart is banged up, and Mike Clevinger is looking at roughly 6 weeks with an MCL sprain. But for one night, with Ashcraft on the mound and Nola still trying to find himself, the Bucs are the side you'd rather be holding. Take the home dog price if you like Philly's bats; otherwise, Pittsburgh is the play and the under is the lean.
