Sánchez (13-4, 2.65 ERA) took the mound at 7:05 PM ET looking to snap Philadelphia out of its post-All-Star-break funk, while Shane Baz (4-9, 3.91) started for an Orioles club that had taken 3 of its last 5 games.

Sánchez made the -154 price look cheap, blanking an Orioles lineup that had nothing behind the plate. The bear case about Philadelphia's recent skid never got a chance to matter — Baltimore's banged-up lineup was the bigger factor, exactly as we argued.

Pregame

Sánchez has been Philadelphia's one reliable arm all season and gives them a real stopper against a Baltimore lineup that's dealing with catcher injuries and thin depth. Baz has been shaky enough in 2026 that betting against him on a given night is defensible even with Baltimore playing better baseball lately. We're sticking with the Phillies here on the strength of the pitching matchup alone.

The matchup carried extra weight beyond the standings. Saturday was MLB's trade deadline, and Bryce Harper had spent the week publicly pushing Phillies brass for a frontline starter, a right-handed bat and bullpen help — comments that reportedly annoyed the front office and drew a response from interim manager Don Mattingly. Baltimore, meanwhile, kept trotting out a lineup without Adley Rutschman and Samuel Basallo, both still sidelined.

None of that mattered once Sánchez settled in. He and the Phillies' offense turned a tense, drama-filled deadline day into a laugher, and the line score tells the story better than any clubhouse quote could.

Philadelphia had lost 4 straight before Saturday, including a stunning sweep at the hands of a Marlins team that had dropped 12 in a row entering that series. Baltimore, by contrast, had won 3 of its previous 5 and had just taken the series opener from these same Phillies a night earlier, so this one looked like a real toss-up on paper.

The health report explains a lot about why Baltimore's lineup had nothing for Sánchez. With Rutschman still working back from wrist inflammation and Basallo shelved too, the Orioles were down to their emergency catching plan, and Ryan Mountcastle's oblique issue has already cost them a middle-of-the-order bat for months. Philadelphia's absences are mostly bullpen-related — Brad Keller, Tanner Banks and Lou Trivino are all out — but none of them were needed Saturday.

Sánchez did the rest. Baltimore managed just 3 hits and never got a runner past second, while Philadelphia broke it open with a run in the 5th and then blew it wide open with a 4-run 8th. It was the kind of statement road win a team fighting front-office tension badly needed heading into August.
