We backed the Phillies to win outright when they were still priced around plus money; that number steamed hard to a heavy favorite by game time, which tells you the market saw this as a mismatch on paper even with Miami playing loose after clinching the series. Philadelphia's rotation and lineup are the better group on a neutral day.

The Phillies came into Miami banged up in the wrong spots. Kyle Schwarber sat out sick with a stomach bug — manager Don Mattingly said he hoped it was a one-day thing — and the bullpen is already down Lou Trivino, Tanner Banks and Brad Keller, all on the shelf. That's a lot of late-inning firepower to be missing on the road.

Philadelphia had actually snapped a four-game skid just days earlier with an 11-4 blowout of the Yankees, so there were signs of life heading south. Both rosters are dealing with real attrition. The Phillies are also without Johan Rojas and Adolis Garcia for the long haul following surgeries, while the Marlins are nursing a handful of relievers back from injury of their own. Neither team was working with a full deck, which made the finale look more like a scramble than a showcase.

In the end it was Miami's bullpen and timely hitting that decided it, with the Marlins scoring in three straight innings from the 5th on to pull away. The sweep drops Philadelphia further off its recent momentum and hands Miami its first series win in weeks — a small building block for a team still trying to climb back to .500.
