Philadelphia's been the best team in baseball for two weeks straight. Seattle's playoff hopes need this series to matter a lot more than the standings suggest it does.

Monday's opener at T-Mobile Park is set for 6:40 PM PT, and neither club has a starter locked in yet. Seattle's rotation is still getting reshuffled after scratching Bryan Woo with shoulder soreness, and Philadelphia has been mixing and matching arms behind its top of the rotation all month. Whoever gets the ball, this is a good measuring-stick spot for both staffs.

The lineup picture is murkier than usual too. Seattle is waiting on word about Brendan Donovan, who was scratched after getting hit in the head during batting-cage work and is one of the more productive bats they've had lately. Philadelphia's dealing with its own bumps and bruises after Derek Hill left with neck stiffness and Luis Arraez was pulled with cramping, though neither has been ruled out long-term.

Both clubs still have a game to get through before this one — Philadelphia closes out its Cardinals series and Seattle wraps with the Cubs — so lineups and bullpen availability could look different by the time first pitch actually rolls around Monday.

As of today, Philadelphia is riding the better form by a wide margin, having won every game in its last 5 and taken care of business against both Miami and St. Louis. Andrew Painter's turned a corner too — his 7-inning outing against the Cardinals was a career high, and if that's the version of him showing up now, it takes real pressure off a bullpen that's been logging heavy innings during the run. Seattle's form is choppier: a 3-2 stretch that includes a lopsided loss to Milwaukee sandwiched around a couple of gritty one-run wins over the Cubs.

None of Seattle's injuries are season-altering on their own, but they're stacking up at an inconvenient time for a club still fighting for playoff position at 62-68. Philadelphia, sitting comfortably at 72-58 and playing its best baseball of the year, can absorb a bump or two without much drop-off. This is exactly the kind of series where depth becomes the story more than any single name on the lineup card.
