First pitch is 9:15 PM CT and the pitching mismatch on paper is the whole ballgame. Wheeler (4-0, 1.67) draws Justin Wrobleski (6-2, 3.07), who is going through the worst stretch of his season at the worst possible time.

Wheeler has been the best version of himself since coming back from thoracic outlet surgery on April 25, and he's somehow gotten sharper as the calendar turned. He's posted a 1.38 ERA in May with a 30:5 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and his last time out he carved Cleveland for 6 shutout innings with 6 punchouts and 2 hits allowed. His four-seamer is back to sitting 94.9, basically his pre-surgery baseline. The Dodgers' lineup is loaded but Wheeler is the wrong guy to chase right now.

On the other side, Wrobleski is the soft underbelly of an otherwise dominant Dodgers run. He opened the year 5-0 with a 1.25 ERA through his first six starts. Since then he's 1-2 with a 6.41 ERA over his last three, including his last outing in Milwaukee where he gave up 5 earned in 5 innings on 8 hits. Philadelphia's offense, even short Brandon Marsh, can do real damage to a left-hander who is leaving pitches up.

The Phillies are 20-8 since their managerial change to Don Mattingly, including 11-2 on the road, and they just swept the Padres in San Diego while allowing a grand total of 3 runs across the series. The Dodgers are on a 5-game win streak of their own after rolling Colorado, but the offense survived a brutal week health-wise. Teoscar Hernandez exited Wednesday with a hamstring strain, and Kike Hernandez is looking at 6-to-8 weeks with a significant oblique tear suffered in that 15-6 win Tuesday.

The market has this priced almost dead even — Phillies +101, Dodgers -111 — which feels generous to LA given who's actually toeing the rubber. Pinnacle has the total at 8.5 with a lean toward the under, and that tracks: if Wheeler is Wheeler, the Phillies don't need much. The Dodgers usually find a way at home, but the Hernandez injuries leave them without two right-handed bats they'd love to have against a righty of this caliber. Give me the Phillies' bullpen and a fully operational Zack Wheeler to do the rest.
