Germán Márquez and his 5.24 ERA drew Noah Cameron and his 5.27 mark in a matchup that looked more like a bullpen game than an ace duel. Márquez was coming off a no-decision against Toronto where he lasted just 4.0 innings, and Cameron had actually been sharp in his last outing, striking out 9 over 7.0 innings against Baltimore in a loss. Neither track record suggested the type of afternoon that was about to unfold.

Hit easily — the Padres' offensive surge (Tatis, Merrill, France all going deep) blew this open, exactly the bull case.

Pregame

San Diego's offense had been buried at the bottom of the league in run production most of the year, but the recent surge from Machado and Tatis made this a live moneyline play even at plus-money. The price reflected a team still finding itself, not a bad team, and the Padres proved it by winning outright and then some.

Cameron never found that form again. He got rocked for 7 earned runs over 5.0 innings and took the loss, unable to slow down a Padres lineup that had been last in the majors in scoring for most of the season. Manny Machado has been the driver of San Diego's turnaround at the plate since June 20, and Fernando Tatis Jr. has been riding right alongside him — Tatis finished this one with 2 home runs and 4 RBIs, part of a 5-homer barrage that also saw Jackson Merrill go deep twice and Tommy France add 2 more.

Kansas City's only run came off a Nick Caglianone solo shot in the first, and after that the Royals had nothing left to answer with. Their pitching staff already down Cole Ragans, Kris Bubic and Alec Marsh for the year, and the lineup missing Bobby Witt Jr. (back tightness) and Maikel Garcia (hand), simply had no depth to survive a Padres lineup that decided to show up all at once.

This game got out of hand late. San Diego scored 4 in the 2nd, then broke it open with a 9-run 8th capped by France's three-run homer, before tacking on 5 more in the 9th, including another Merrill blast. The Padres finished with 19 hits against just 8 for Kansas City, a total blowout after dropping the first two games of the series.

It's a wild swing for a Padres team that's still just 48-50 and dealing with a rotation ravaged by injury — Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta and Lucas Giolito are all out, which is why a back-end arm like Márquez was even needed in this spot. San Diego will take the split personality if it means stealing the finale in this fashion.

For the Royals, it's a reminder of how thin the margins have gotten at 40-59. Salvador Perez and Lane Thomas carried the offense a day earlier, but with Witt out of the lineup and the bullpen already stretched by injuries to Carlos Estevez and Nick Mears, one bad afternoon from the rotation can spiral into a laugher fast — and Sunday, it did.
