Michael King and Seth Lugo opened the second half of the schedule against each other at Kauffman Stadium, first pitch 7:10 PM CT. King came in the better arm on paper, riding a strong final outing before the break, while Lugo was trying to shake a rough final start of his own heading into Friday.

Miss — the bear case wrote itself as San Diego's shorthanded pen coughed up a 3-run 10th-inning lead in the 7-6 loss.

Pregame

We backed the Padres to win outright, leaning on their better overall record and a King who'd looked sharp in his last outing before this one. That price didn't account for how thin San Diego's bullpen has gotten with two relievers on the IL and another away on bereavement leave. Kansas City's pen has been the worst in baseball by ERA, so betting the Padres to close it out wasn't unreasonable — it just didn't hold.

San Diego's issue wasn't the rotation, it was the bridge to the ninth. Jason Adam and Jeremiah Estrada are both on the 15-day IL, and Wandy Peralta is away on bereavement leave, leaving Craig Stammen thinner than usual in high-leverage spots. Kansas City, meanwhile, is dealing with its own attrition on the position player side with Kyle Isbel and Maikel Garcia both out, but a m banged-up Royals pen has been the bigger story all year.

None of that mattered much through nine. This one needed extra innings to settle, and once it got there, both bullpens did exactly what their recent form suggested they might.

San Diego looked like it had stolen one. The Padres scratched across 2 in the 5th, added a run in the 9th to tie it, then broke through for 3 more in the top of the 10th to seemingly put it away. Kansas City had other plans, answering with 4 runs in the bottom half to win it outright, 7-6.

It's the kind of finish that fits both trajectories. San Diego came in at 48-48 and had won 3 of its last 5, including a pair of one-run escapes against Toronto, but that late-inning fragility showed up again on the road. Kansas City, sitting at 38-59 and tied for the worst record in the sport, had dropped 5 in a row and desperately needed a spark — and got one in the most chaotic way possible.

For a team going nowhere in the standings, snapping a 5-game slide with a walk-off-style comeback against a .500 club is still worth something in the clubhouse. For the Padres, it's a reminder that a shorthanded bullpen can undo a strong start from King in a hurry, and that's the version of this team the second half can't afford to lean on too often.
