The Padres have owned this matchup. They're up 2-0 in the series after Saturday's 7-4 win, where Nick Castellanos cleared the bases with a 3-run shot and rookie Rodolfo Durán homered for his first career hit. Now they get the chance to walk out of T-Mobile Park with a broom.

The wrinkle is who's pitching. Lucas Giolito is making his 2026 season debut after signing with San Diego on April 22 and grinding through 4 minor-league tune-ups (4.76 ERA across 17 innings, though his last outing was 1 run over 6). It's a Sunday Night Baseball cameo from a guy who was on the free-agent scrap heap a month ago, and the Padres are trusting him in a sweep spot because, frankly, the rotation has no choice.

Look at that Padres IL — Darvish, Musgrove, Pivetta, Marquez, and Waldron are all unavailable. That's basically an entire rotation in scrubs. Giolito isn't a luxury here, he's a necessity. On the other side, George Kirby has been quietly excellent at 5-2 with a 2.84 ERA, coming off a 7-strikeout, 5-inning win over Houston on May 11 and a 7-inning effort against Atlanta before that where the Mariners' bats wasted him with 16 punchouts.

Seattle's lineup problem is bigger than one bad night. Cal Raleigh is shut down for a week with the oblique, Mitch Garver got scratched Saturday with back tightness, and Brendan Donovan was a load-management scratch in the same game. The Mariners are trying to hold serve at home against a Padres team that's already taken 5 in a row from them this year, and they're doing it without their catcher, their backup catcher, and possibly their third baseman.

The market makes Seattle a clear favorite — Kirby's track record plus home field plus a Giolito debut means -155 on the Pinnacle moneyline. But the EV reads negative on every side, which is the book's way of telling you this one is priced cleanly. If you trust the Padres' offense to keep stomping on a depleted Mariners lineup, the road dog at +142 is the live ticket. Otherwise, Kirby's the safer story and the boring right answer.
