San Diego didn't hand the ball to a traditional starter for this one — Wandy Peralta got the call as the opener, a bullpen-game workaround for a rotation that's been living on the injured list for weeks. Cleveland countered with Joey Cantillo, who came in at 8-7 and has quietly given the Guardians length all year even as the record around him has been ugly.

The opener plan wasn't really the problem — San Diego's lineup managed just 1 hit all night, so it barely mattered who threw the first inning. Cleveland's offense did the opposite, chipping away with a run in each of the first two frames before breaking it open late, while Cantillo did what he's done most of the summer: keep his team in position to win.

It's a rare good night for a Guardians club that came in having dropped 5 of their last 6. San Diego, meanwhile, had won 6 straight and looked like one of the hotter teams in baseball entering the weekend — Saturday was the exception, not a new trend, but it was a thorough one.

Cleveland's win came with a silver lining beyond the final score. Angel Genao, the rookie shortstop, has been a bright spot since getting the call up, and nights like this one are exactly why Stephen Vogt's club has kept finding ways to stay competitive despite the overall record. It's the kind of individual performance that doesn't show up in the standings but matters for what Cleveland looks like down the stretch.

San Diego's pitching picture explains a lot about why an opener was necessary. Nick Pivetta and Lucas Giolito are both still building back from elbow issues, and Joe Musgrove has been working through minor-league rehab starts as he eyes a return from a long absence. None of them were in position to start this game, which speaks to how thin things have gotten up top even for a team playing meaningful August baseball.

None of that erases the bigger picture: the Padres are still holding a wild-card spot and still one of the better stories in the league this summer, and one lopsided loss in Cleveland doesn't change that. But it's a reminder that even hot teams have nights where the pitching plan doesn't hold and the lineup goes cold at the same time.
