On the other side, Adrian Houser is the $22 million offseason addition who has been one of the worst starters in baseball. He's 0-3 with a 7.12 ERA, has allowed at least 3 runs in every outing, and his last trip to the mound vs. the Marlins ended with 11 hits and 8 earned in 4 innings. Lefty bats are hitting .412 against him. Around the Foghorn already has stories up about who might replace him in the rotation.
The Giants are 14-22, scoring barely 3 runs a game, and just dropped Monday's series opener to fall further into the divisional basement. Harrison Bader is rehabbing in Sacramento, Logan Webb is day-to-day, and the bullpen is stitched together with Erik Miller, Jason Foley, and Randy Rodriguez all on the IL. There's not a lot of cavalry coming.
The total sits at 8.5 with the over juiced to -112 — and given both starters' ERAs are north of 7, it's tempting. The catch is Oracle Park, which suppresses everything, plus a Giants offense that can make any pitcher look fine for 5 innings. The market is still pricing the Padres as the better team here, which is fair, but a knuckleballer in San Francisco wind is its own kind of chaos.
Bottom line: San Diego should win this game, but "should" is doing a lot of work when Waldron is your guy. If the knuckler dances, the Padres steal a sweep-clinching road W. If it doesn't, the Giants finally get to feast on something other than their own rotation.
