Walker Buehler (6-5, 5.18 ERA) gets the ball for San Diego with a chance to snap out of a genuinely ugly stretch, while Arizona counters with rookie Kohl Drake (0-0, 4.85 ERA), who's still finding his footing in the majors. First pitch is 6:40 PM MT.

Arizona's the shorter price here and it holds up — Drake's swing-and-miss stuff in his last look gives the Diamondbacks a puncher's chance even in an unproven spot, while Buehler's given up 16 earned runs across his last two starts. San Diego's offense is live enough to make this closer than the ticket suggests, but backing the home team on the moneyline is the safer side of this coin-flip price.

Buehler's last time out against the Giants was a mess — 4.1 innings, 3 earned runs, 8 hits and just 1 strikeout on 79 pitches, the kind of short, hittable outing that's become the pattern rather than the exception. Drake, on the other hand, has been a pleasant surprise since getting called up: his last start against Cleveland went 4 innings with 6 strikeouts against just 1 walk, evidence the strikeout stuff that made him a well-regarded prospect is real even if the results are still uneven.

Both rotations are held together with tape right now. San Diego is without Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta and Lucas Giolito, which is exactly why a struggling Buehler keeps getting the ball every fifth day regardless of how the last one went. Arizona's situation is arguably worse on paper — Zac Gallen, Corbin Burnes, Ryne Nelson and Blake Walston are all out, which is how a guy with a 7.83 ERA at Triple-A a month ago is now starting series games in August.

This set has already been a track meet. San Diego jumped Arizona 9-4 in the middle game before the Diamondbacks answered right back with a 10-4 blowout of their own, and neither bullpen has looked fresh doing it. With both rotations running on fumes, whichever relief corps has more left in the tank by the middle innings tonight probably decides this one.

The Padres are still hanging around the periphery of the wild-card picture at 59-56, and Arizona sits just a couple games better at 61-54 — this is two teams that can't afford to just punt a series finale. Neither offense has been shy about scoring lately, which tracks with a total that's been moving as high as it has this series.
