This one closes out a wild four-game set with the Braves still up 2-1 in the series and their ace on the mound. Chris Sale (10-6, 2.06 ERA) draws Griffin Canning (1-8, 6.67 ERA) for a 12:15 PM ET matinee at Truist Park, and the gap between those two lines tells you most of what you need to know about how lopsided this individual matchup looks on paper.

We took the Braves at -224 to win outright, and the price has since tightened to -245 as the market leans harder into Sale's start. That's the right side on paper — a 2.06 ERA arm against a lineup missing multiple bats beats a staff ace with a 6.67 ERA and a shredded rotation behind him nine times out of ten. The catch is San Diego's already won 4 of 5 against this team this season, so the outright number isn't as automatic as the pitching gap suggests.

San Diego's rotation has been a mess for weeks, and Canning's been squarely in the middle of it. He got knocked around in his last outing against Kansas City, lasting just 3.2 innings and allowing 4 earned runs, and he's doing it without Joe Musgrove, Nick Pivetta, Yu Darvish or Lucas Giolito available to bail the group out. Sale, meanwhile, is coming off seven shutout innings against Texas and hasn't looked his age all year.

The Padres haven't cared much about any of that the last three days. Manny Machado went deep twice and Fernando Tatis Jr. crushed the longest home run in the majors this season, a 474-foot bomb, in Tuesday's 8-3 rout. San Diego has now taken 4 of 5 from Atlanta this year, and that recent form is doing a lot of work to keep the Padres relevant in a series they have no business being competitive in given the standings gap.

Atlanta still has the far better record and the deeper roster, sitting at 59-42 to San Diego's 50-52, but both sides are banged up in ways that shape this one. The Braves are still waiting on Ronald Acuna Jr., who's working back from a hamstring issue and could return before the homestand wraps, while Sean Murphy, Ha-Seong Kim and a chunk of the pitching staff — Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach, AJ Smith-Shawver — remain sidelined. San Diego's absences run just as deep, with Jason Adam, Jeremiah Estrada and Miguel Andujar all out on top of the rotation holes.

Whichever way the standings gap and injury reports get read, the story of the last three days has been San Diego's lineup refusing to go quiet against a team with a much better record. Atlanta wants Sale to be the answer to that, and if he's anywhere close to his recent form, this figures to be a much different game than the slugfests the two clubs have traded through the first three.
