Walker Buehler and Reynaldo López drew the Tuesday assignment at 7:15 PM ET, and neither arrived with much margin for error. Buehler's June turnaround — a 2-0 stretch with a 1.71 ERA — had felt like real progress for San Diego's rotation, but July had already turned ugly again before this start. López, meanwhile, was pitching well above his listed ERA after being yanked to the bullpen earlier this season and fighting his way back into a starting role.

Busted — the Padres stormed back with 13 hits for an 8-3 win, exactly the rotation-thinness scenario in the bear case.

Pregame

We backed the Braves to win outright off their overall record and Monday's series-opening win, taking that price at -137. Atlanta's edge was supposed to come from being the deeper, better team even with Acuña out, but a rotation missing three starters left little room for error against a lineup that scored 19 runs just days earlier.

Atlanta took the series opener 3-2 on Monday behind a Michael Harris II homer, so the Braves came in feeling good about their chances to build on that. San Diego's lineup had other ideas. Manny Machado and company had already shown flashes of pop in that loss, and a lineup that dropped 19 runs on Kansas City just two days earlier clearly hadn't lost the thread.

Atlanta's roster is still without Ronald Acuña Jr., who hasn't played since early June and remains without a firm return date as he works back from a recurring hamstring strain. That's a lineup missing its best player, and it showed once the Padres got rolling — Truist Park never found the answer to slow them down.

The final line tells the story: 13 hits for San Diego against just 4 for Atlanta, with the Padres breaking it open with a 3-run fourth and tacking on insurance late. It's the kind of complete offensive night San Diego badly needed after dropping two of three to Kansas City the week before, and it snaps right back at a Braves team that had won 4 of its last 5 coming in.

Both rotations are dealing with real attrition. San Diego is still missing Joe Musgrove and Nick Pivetta for the year's foreseeable future, and Yu Darvish remains a ways off. Atlanta's absences run just as deep — Spencer Strider, Spencer Schwellenbach and AJ Smith-Shawver are all out long-term, which is a big reason López ended up starting again in the first place.

For a Padres team still hovering below .500 at 49-51, a night like this matters more than the standings suggest. San Diego isn't out of the wild-card picture, and blowing a series opener before responding with a laugher like this is exactly the kind of resilience a fringe playoff team needs to show down the stretch. Atlanta, at 58-41 and comfortably ahead in the NL East race, can afford one bad night more easily — but Acuña's absence is the storyline to watch as this series plays out.
