Brandon Young (9-3, 3.33 ERA) got the ball for Baltimore looking to snap a personal cold spell on the mound, while Bailey Ober (7-4, 4.64 ERA) tried to keep the Twins' recent pitching stability going for Minnesota. Both arms came in with real form behind them, which made the pitching matchup the actual crux of this rubber match.

The Twins never got untracked, falling behind 4-0 before the third inning was over and finishing with just 2 runs on 7 hits. Ober's quality-start streak didn't survive the night, and the home-field case evaporated the moment Baltimore's lineup got moving early.

Pregame

The Twins are the shorter price here and it's earned — Minnesota just took the series opener from this same Orioles club and gets a favorable pitching matchup with Ober working off two straight quality starts. Baltimore's offense has to prove it can solve a Twins pitching staff that just held them to 5 runs. Backing Minnesota to win outright is the safer side of this coin flip.

The subplot in Baltimore's dugout all series has been Gunnar Henderson, who's mired in a lineup-wide slump but still gets penciled in at leadoff every night under Craig Albernaz. Minnesota, meanwhile, is nursing its own health questions — Joe Ryan is still working back from a glute issue and Byron Buxton only just got through a full workout at Target Field, so neither club was rolling out its best-case roster.

None of that mattered much once the first two innings played out. Baltimore jumped on the board early and often, and by the time the dust settled the Orioles had banked their series win behind a lineup that hit early and a pitching staff that made it stand up.

The Orioles put up 2 runs in each of the first two innings and never let Minnesota climb back into it, finishing with 11 hits to the Twins' 7. Young wasn't spotless, but the O's offense gave him more than enough cushion, and Baltimore's bullpen — thin as it's been all year with Bautista and Helsley both still on the 60-day IL — didn't need to be perfect, just good enough.

This one also snapped a stretch where both clubs had been trading results all week. Baltimore's win keeps them within shouting distance in a season that's mostly been about avoiding total collapse, while Minnesota's loss extends a rough patch that's left them treading water at 59-62 with a beat-up rotation.
