Troy Melton (5-1, 1.75 ERA) got the ball looking to bounce back from a shaky no-decision against Kansas City, and Dean Kremer (1-3, 6.50 ERA) took the mound for Baltimore trying to find any version of the pitcher who once had a 3.18 ERA stretch earlier this season. The gap between those two arms showed up fast.

The Tigers won 14-0, cashing the moneyline pick as Melton and Detroit's bats dominated from the jump.

Pregame

We backed the Tigers at -137 to win outright, and Melton gave Detroit exactly the kind of form edge that price implied. Kremer's shaky 6.50 ERA made Baltimore vulnerable even off a series-opening win, and the Orioles' lineup is playing shorthanded without both catchers. That gap between a rock-solid arm and a scuffling one was the whole story.

Detroit's lineup had extra juice with Javier Baez back in the fold, and it showed everywhere — the Tigers strung together at least one run in seven of their eight innings and finished with 19 hits against an Orioles pitching staff that had no answers. Baltimore, by contrast, managed just 3 hits all night and never got a runner past second.

This one was never competitive. Detroit scored in bunches early and just kept piling on, turning what looked like a pick-your-number total on the board into an easy trip to the under and a laugher of a run differential.

The Orioles' offense has real excuses right now. Both catchers are compromised — Adley Rutschman (wrist) and Samuel Basallo (shoulder) are shelved, and Ryan Mountcastle's rehab from a fractured foot just hit another delay. That's a lineup running without three key bats, and it showed against a Tigers staff that suddenly looks a lot deeper than its 50-57 record suggests.

Baltimore had won 3 of its last 5 coming in, including that 8-5 win over these same Tigers just a night earlier, so this wasn't a team in freefall — it was a team that ran into a buzzsaw start and a lineup clicking on all cylinders. Kremer's homer-prone stretch this year made him a live target, and Detroit made him pay from the jump.

For Detroit, it's the kind of statement win a sub-.500 team needs before a stretch run — a reminder that when Melton is right and the bats show up together, they can look like one of the better clubs in the division for a night. Whether that's sustainable with Jack Flaherty out and the rotation thin behind him is a different question, but on July 28 it didn't matter one bit.
