The Orioles' offense has real excuses right now. Both catchers are compromised — Adley Rutschman (wrist) and Samuel Basallo (shoulder) are shelved, and Ryan Mountcastle's rehab from a fractured foot just hit another delay. That's a lineup running without three key bats, and it showed against a Tigers staff that suddenly looks a lot deeper than its 50-57 record suggests.

Baltimore had won 3 of its last 5 coming in, including that 8-5 win over these same Tigers just a night earlier, so this wasn't a team in freefall — it was a team that ran into a buzzsaw start and a lineup clicking on all cylinders. Kremer's homer-prone stretch this year made him a live target, and Detroit made him pay from the jump.

For Detroit, it's the kind of statement win a sub-.500 team needs before a stretch run — a reminder that when Melton is right and the bats show up together, they can look like one of the better clubs in the division for a night. Whether that's sustainable with Jack Flaherty out and the rotation thin behind him is a different question, but on July 28 it didn't matter one bit.
