Trevor Rogers and Freddy Peralta took the ball for the finale, two starters with strikingly similar years — Rogers sits at 7-8 with a 4.15 ERA, Peralta at 5-9 with a 5.27 ERA. Neither entered on a hot streak. Rogers' last time out, a 4.0-inning, 4-strikeout showing against the Twins on August 10, ended in a loss; Peralta went six shutout-adjacent innings against the Athletics that same day and still walked away with a no-decision.

Both pitching staffs are running thin. Baltimore is already without Ryan Mountcastle, Jordan Westburg and three relievers — Felix Bautista, Ryan Helsley and Colin Selby — all lost to procedures or extended rehab. Tampa Bay's list cuts even deeper into the arms, with Griffin Jax, Shane McClanahan and Ryan Pepiot all sidelined, which left the Rays with less margin for error the moment Peralta ran into trouble.

The pregame line still favored Tampa Bay behind that 74-48 record, but sharp money had already piled onto the Over. A combined 12 runs made that read look sharp by the final out.

Baltimore's night was quiet through four innings, then it wasn't. A three-run fifth cracked things open, and a seven-run sixth put it away for good — the kind of frame that turns a competitive series finale into a laugher. Tampa Bay never got the deficit back under control; its lone offense came in single-run innings in the fourth and sixth, nowhere near enough to answer.

None of it moves Tampa Bay off its perch. The Rays still sit at 74-48, comfortably the better record in this matchup, and they'd been red-hot before this set, sweeping a 3-game stretch against the Athletics. But this series went the other way entirely — after taking the first two meetings, Baltimore made it three straight, and the Rays have now dropped three in a row to a team with a losing record.

For Baltimore, at 60-63, it's a nice reminder they can still play spoiler against the top of the division. For Tampa Bay, it's a sour way to close a set that started with plenty of promise — proof that even a 74-48 club can get punched around when the pitching staff is running on fumes.
