Baltimore hands the ball to Kyle Bradish, fresh off signing a five-year, $90 million extension that locks him up through 2031 after he clawed his way back from Tommy John surgery. Texas counters with Jacob deGrom for the first pitch at 6:15 PM CT on Saturday, August 8, and both arms are trying to shake off rocky last outings before this one gets going.

Texas gets the nod here even with deGrom coming off a walk-filled disaster in Houston — he's shown he can still miss bats when his command is right, and the Rangers have won 2 straight heading in. Bradish's shortened last outing raises its own questions about where Baltimore's ace is physically. Lean Rangers to get it done at home.

deGrom's last time out was a mess — 5 walks and 5 earned runs in just 3.1 innings against Houston, the kind of start that puts a magnifying glass on his health at 38 years old. Texas is already without Jack Leiter, Jakob Junis and Jordan Montgomery from the rotation picture, and MacKenzie Gore is away on paternity leave, so deGrom settling back in matters more than usual for a Rangers staff running thin.

Bradish isn't exactly rolling either — his last start ended after just 53 pitches and 3 innings in a loss to Philadelphia. Baltimore's lineup has had its own cold stretches too, which is part of why the number crunchers still like Texas to get the win here even with deGrom's control issues fresh in mind.

Both clubs arrive having gone 2-3 over their last 5, but they're pointed in different directions. Texas has won 2 straight, salvaging a series against a hot San Francisco club, while Baltimore dropped its last game and is coming off getting outscored 0-13 in a pair of losses to Philadelphia sandwiched around a stretch where they took 2 of 3 from the Angels. Neither team looks like it's found its footing for a real second-half push, and this series is a chance for either side to grab some momentum before the stretch run.

The injury sheets on both sides are long and load-bearing. Baltimore is without Ryan Mountcastle, Jordan Westburg and Zach Eflin for the season and still waiting on Felix Bautista and Ryan Helsley to work back from the bullpen. Texas is banged up behind the plate with both Danny Jansen and Kyle Higashioka out, and Josh Jung remains without a firm return timeline at third. Whichever lineup gets a healthier version of itself on the field first probably has the edge in this series.
