Dean Kremer (1-2, 4.15 ERA) got the ball for Baltimore looking to build off a shaky last outing, while Peter Lambert (8-5, 3.03 ERA) took the mound for Houston fresh off one of his best starts of the year against Texas.

Cashed — Baltimore's bullpen and late offense got it done, exactly the momentum play we backed.

Pregame

Baltimore came in as the plus-money side off the back of a five-game winning streak, and that price looked generous given how the O's bullpen has stabilized down the stretch. Houston's rotation is stretched thin with multiple starters on the shelf, which makes betting against Baltimore's momentum a tougher sell than the raw records suggest. The Orioles getting it done late is becoming a pattern worth respecting.

Lambert has quietly turned into the steadiest arm in the Astros' rotation, which says a lot given how many names have cycled through Houston's injured list this year. With Ronel Blanco, Hayden Wesneski, Brandon Walter and Mike Burrows all sidelined, the Astros have leaned hard on whoever's healthy — and Lambert answered the call again here, working into the game with his command intact.

Baltimore's lineup has been the story of its second half so far. The O's rolled into the break on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Kansas City, and they didn't cool off — Friday's win made it five straight. That kind of stretch matters for a team sitting at 46-51, still hunting for daylight in a crowded middle of the pack.

Houston, meanwhile, is dealing with a rougher stretch and a thinning roster. Brice Matthews went down with a knee injury after crashing into the outfield wall against Texas last week, and the Astros are still without Carlos Correa, who had ankle surgery back in June. Losing Matthews stings a bit more given the state of the org's pitching depth — Houston needed his bat, and now it's without both that and half its rotation.

The game itself played out like a lot of Orioles wins this year have — low-scoring, tight, decided late. Houston got early runs in the 1st and 3rd off Kremer and had this one in hand for most of the night, but Baltimore's bullpen held the line and the offense broke through with a 2-run 8th to flip it.

It's not a signature win, and Kremer's line probably won't turn heads, but for an Orioles club trying to prove last month wasn't a fluke, five in a row against a good Astros team is exactly the kind of result they needed.
