Cade Cavalli (6-4, 3.68 ERA) got the ball for Washington at 1:10 PM MT, and the matchup lined up well against Rockies rookie Gabriel Hughes (0-1, 2.45), a first-round arm out of Gonzaga who's barely three weeks into his big league career.

Washington crushed Colorado 8-0, cashing easily as the offensive-mismatch case played out to the letter.

Pregame

We took Washington at -132 on the moneyline, backing the sport's most productive offense against a rebuilding club that's 20 games under .500. Cavalli's recent strikeout stuff added an extra layer of confidence that this wasn't just a lineup mismatch. The price has since ticked to -139, confirming the market saw the same gap we did.

Washington's rotation has taken a beating this year — Jake Irvin, Trevor Williams and Josiah Gray are all still working back from the 60-day IL — but Cavalli's been the steady arm holding things together. Colorado, meanwhile, is still without center fielder Brenton Doyle, who was only just cleared to resume his rehab assignment. The market had leaned toward another high-scoring affair given how loud both offenses had been through the first 2 games at altitude.

And loud they'd been — a night earlier Hunter Goodman had walked Colorado off, 8-7, his 4th homer in 3 games after a 10-game power drought. There'd be no repeat of that Wednesday. Washington's offense, the one leading the majors in runs and home runs, made sure of it.

Cavalli was the story early, cruising into the middle innings, and then the Nationals turned a tight game into a rout with a 6-run 7th that buried Colorado for good. 14 hits, 3 Rockies errors, 0 runs allowed all afternoon — after Tuesday's walk-off gut-punch, Washington answered as emphatically as it possibly could.

This series was billed as a clash of styles — a .500 Nationals club trying to find consistency against a Rockies team with little to play for but pride — and it played out true to form. Colorado's 41-62 mark is still among the worst in baseball, and asking a rookie making just his 2nd career MLB start to slow down a lineup this hot was always a tall order. Hughes had flashed real stuff in his first month up, but Wednesday wasn't his day.

Washington heads out of Denver having taken 2 of 3, a small step in a season still hunting for direction. For the Rockies, it's more of the same — a flash of life from Goodman one night, buried the next by a team simply operating on another level right now.
