Carson Palmquist got the ball for Washington on 6:40 PM MT, and there was a wrinkle to the matchup: Palmquist actually started his pro career in the Rockies system before Washington claimed him off waivers this summer. Michael Lorenzen took the mound for Colorado looking to build off a five-inning, one-run outing against the Giants last time out.

The Nationals' moneyline pick missed as Colorado's four-run second held up in an 8-7 win.

Pregame

Washington priced up as a modest favorite at -110, with fair odds putting them just over a coin flip to win outright. The Nationals had the fresher form and were coming off a blowout win in this same building, which made them the value side over a Rockies team that had dropped four of five. That read didn't hold up against a Coors environment that erased Washington's lead by the middle innings.

Neither starter made it far. Washington's rotation is already stretched thin with Jake Irvin, Trevor Williams, DJ Herz and Josiah Gray all on the 60-day IL, which is exactly why a rookie waiver claim was starting a series finale at altitude. Colorado's staff is in a similar spot with Jose Quintana, Chase Dollander and McCade Brown all shelved, and that thin margin for error at Coors Field is precisely why the total kept climbing into the pregame line.

The Nationals had just throttled the Rockies 7-3 the night before, with Andres Chaparro, CJ Abrams and Jacob Young all going deep, so Washington rolled into this one looking to salt away the series. Coors had other ideas.

Washington jumped out 2-0 in the first, but Colorado answered with a four-run second and never let the Nationals pull away again. Washington tacked on single runs across four different innings, but every answer from Colorado was there waiting -- a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth kept the Rockies in front, and a Nationals run in the seventh wasn't enough to flip it. The Nationals got Colorado's lead down to one with a run in the ninth, but couldn't complete the comeback.

It's the kind of loss that stings more than it should for a team fighting to stay above .500 -- Washington is 51-50 and still very much in the thick of things, while Colorado, sitting at 40-62, needed exactly this type of night to feel good about anything right now. The Nationals get a shot to close the series Wednesday, and after Tuesday's back-and-forth, nobody in that dugout wants to hear the word 'Coors' again for a while.
