Alvarez (2-3, 4.22 ERA) got the ball for Washington against Freeland (2-8, 7.30), a matchup that looked lopsided on paper before first pitch at 6:40 PM MT — and by the time it ended, the paper was right.

Nationals won outright 7-3, cashing the moneyline as the better-pitching side hit exactly as expected.

Pregame

Washington opened as a solid road favorite and we took the Nationals at -117, backing the better arm on paper and a lineup capable of erupting at any moment. The number's since crept to -127, which tells you the market agreed with the pitching mismatch. Freeland's ERA north of 7 made this a lean-in spot even on the road.

Freeland has been a soft touch all year, and the injury sheets tell you why neither club is playing with a full deck. The Rockies are without Brenton Doyle, Jose Quintana and Kris Bryant, while the Nationals are still waiting on Jake Irvin, Trevor Williams and Josiah Gray to work back from the 60-day IL — thin depth on both sides that put extra weight on whoever actually took the mound Monday.

None of that stopped Washington from missing early. Freeland worked around traffic for two clean innings before the Rockies actually got to Alvarez first, plating 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd to grab a brief lead at home.

That lead lasted about as long as it takes to say Coors Field. Washington had already banked 3 runs in the top of the 1st, and once the Rockies bullpen came in, the floodgates opened — 1 more in the 6th, 2 in the 7th and a final insurance run in the 9th turned a tight ballgame into a laugher.

This is a Nationals team that's been streaky all month — a 23-4 demolition of the Athletics one night, a 1-15 embarrassment the next — but Monday's win pushed them back to .500 at 50-50. Colorado, meanwhile, can't buy consistency at 40-61, and a home crowd that saw a 10-3 win over Cincinnati last week watched the bullpen cough this one right back up.

Freeland's final line — 9 strikeouts in his last outing against the Giants — hinted he still has swing-and-miss stuff in the tank, but a 7.30 ERA doesn't lie about how often contact finds grass against him. Alvarez wasn't sharp either judging by his own shaky last start, yet Washington's offense made sure it didn't matter.

Twelve hits and 7 runs against a Coors Field mound is exactly the kind of night that keeps a rebuilding club treading water instead of sinking, and exactly the kind of loss that keeps piling onto a Rockies season that's already lost.
